Thank you in advance for any advice you might have on this. I have a 2k 740i. I just did the valley pan gasket fix. Replaced all gaskets, hoses and water pump. Followed online forum info as well as Bentley. Reinstalled in reverse order and was expecting to turn key and start. Not what happened.

Turn key car attempted to start then died. I chalked this up to the fuel pressure have to be repressurized.

2nd attempt car starts and runs rough (not violently rough, just not smooth). Hear a single knock but it does not sound like cylinder or valve. Still running rough 4 sec later hear another single knock. I can accelerate RPM but idle is still rough. Increase RPM one more time and when it comes back down to idle it turns off. Acceleration was smooth.

Two knocks during 15 to 20 seconds of running.

At this time I am assuming a vacuum problem for the running rough. (don't know if this is true as I don't get to start it a third time)

Go to start it and the starter makes the same type of knocking noise and will not turn the motor over.

Plug in my code reader and NO error codes.

My current thought is that the for some reason the car does not think it is running and retries to start what the engine in running. Higher RPM starter engaged burned out starter. What would make that happen?

I don't want to slap another starter in without knowing why it keeps engaging while motor is running. Starters cost way to much to use as debugging tool.

I am looking for any help and experiences that I can get.

Thanks Again

Welcome to the forum. I don't have an answer for you but hopefully someone will chime in some advice soon.

Very strange, check the relay / loom for the starter motor. The solenoid should be only active once the starter is working and then disengaged from the flex plate so the engine can run.

It all works now. Posting to thread for any body who wants to know what I did.

Took the fan back out (nothing to do with the problem I just have big hands and wanted the room)

Disconnected all connections that were removed during the valley pan gasket project. Including the battery negative.

Put battery on charger (smart charger says it was at 12.9) figured it could not hurt.

Cleaned and Applied protectant to all electrical connections.

Connected everything back up.

Turn key, and it started.

Ran rough for about 15 sec then smoothed out. It was like the computer was re-tuning itself. Put 150 miles on it. Runs great no leaks

Thank you for your feedback.
