When I bought my 09 335i the sales person told me to setup the SOS with the password he told me but I just haven't had time to do that. Just wondering what it exactly does? Thanks!

This is for BMW Assist (see this link (http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Explore/BMWValue/BMWAssist/default.aspx)), which you can use in lieu of (or in addition to!) services such as AAA. Before committing to it, be aware of any subscription fees. I seem to recall getting it free for the first 4 years, but after that a subscription kicks in. So you should still have a free year or so, but since you're not the original owner check w/ BMW on the terms.

Allen, like mentioned above the Assist feature comes free for the first 4 years (At least I got it free for the first 4 years) after which there is a fee of around $200 per year. The assist features can come handy to call BMW in case of a break down or to make 1 or 2 free satellite calls in a year if we are in an area where we are out of radio signal. I personally did not feel it was worth to renue this feature so I just opted out ;)

If you have the extended maintenance plan you also have BMW assist.

So, no extended maintenance plan, no accident automatic SOS??

If you're past the 4yr/50k factory maintenance plan.

I think you are confusing road side assistance with BMW assist. The former comes with the extended plan, the latter does not:

I would hope that as a customer satisfaction feature, an accident SOS should never expire.

It's like after 4/50, the seat belts won't work unless you pay.

Roadside assistance is one thing, a major collision is another.

That is rather extreme. Many new cars still dont have anything close to an OnStar help system. Think about how many base Corollas are bought each day.

How the heck is an additional optional monitoring service the same as a mandatory safety feature? :confused
BMW assist is not mandated by law, it is a perk BMW pays for (4 years since new in US, and only 1 year here in Canada). It is like saying every house sold should come with an alarm and a free monitoring service, just not realistic at all. If you want the extra peace of mind, you gotta pay for it. BMW is just giving extra incentives for new car owners and to stay competitive with other brands. No one gives away free stuff for life, not when it requires salaried employees and incurs equipment cost to keep the service.
