View Full Version : WOT hesitation no SES ideas?

Can't help it, car loves the cool air here lately, and I "drive" my car, so its been getting somewhat frequent carbon cleaning WOT blasts to redline (when road conditions allow, of course ;))

And I've begun to notice a very distinct "resistance" to a smooth pull throughout the rev range. It's fighting something, no doubt about it. Didn't use to, but it almost seems like this cold air is bad for the car, which we all know isn't the case.

I'm thinking my two most likely culprits are a clogged/old fuel filter, or clogged/failing catalytics.

The strange thing is that while this has been going on for days, I've got no SES light for misfire or catalytic efficiency or whatever, no SES at all, really, aside from that phantom P0171 that I'm blaming on old O2 sensors.

Perhaps my MAF is failing? I can't detect any abnormalities in its CFM readings, but it's been linked to P0171 and 174 (tho I don't have the 174)

Thoughts?

Clean your maf, replace your spark plugs and fuel filter. The o2 sensors can cause that, but I'd blame the maf/tps first, also replace your air filter. If you think your cats are clogged, remove the precat o2 sensors, drive it and see if it's better. Also do a seafoam if you can... I did the whole maf/air filter/o2 sensors/spark plugs/seafoam and it's like a whole new car.

All of the above are possibilities - but the most likely cause is a failing MAF

It was the MAF.

I finally started getting the accompanying P0174 to tango with my P0171, which by all counts strongly point to the MAF.

I know everyone says go with OE Bosch or the VW sensor, and that's cool, but I didn't want to invest a c-note+ in what I didn't know 100% to be the culprit- my car was running what I thought was pretty good, just a few symptoms of a failing MAF, so I took a chance on an Ebay cheapie to confirm or continue my issue.

_side note tangent: ebay userid te_x_as had the cheapest MAF w/ a year warranty, under $30, but when they didn't ship after a week and I emailed 'em a "WTF?" the dude emails me sincerely apologizing, they had some issues, offers me a full refund PLUS $50 to use towards purchasing one locally. Of course I took him up on the offer, thought that was pretty damn stand-up of them, ultimately I got my MAF for free :buttrock

Anyway, I ended up going with the next higher priced one that still came with a year warranty, got it today, put it in after work today, and.......

HOLY PISSED OFF CAR, BATMAN!!!!:evil2:evil2:evil2:evil2

I never knew my car could run this hard or pull this strong, it never has, not since I bought it. It feels like I sprayed it with a 50 shot or something, it's nuts!

Good Lord it was just melting the RR and even spinning up the LR 285's I put on the other day, just engulfing the traffic behind me in billowing clouds of rev-limiter in 1st and most of 2nd tire-howling smoking glory. Unreal.....

I'm in love all over again :devillook
