I paid $6900 for my 00 540i sport with 94k miles. That prices are all across the board.

That seems high to me. Also, you may want to do some researching on how much of a pita a 540 can be after 100k.

I would keep shopping.

Yeah that's a bit pricy for that mileage, not knowing the history. I picked my 99 540i6 up for 6500 with 124k on the clock from a fellow forum member 11 moths ago. i would stay patient and wait for a lower mileage one. I have seen these suckers go past 300k on the same power plant and drivetrain though with regular maintenance. If the previous owner replaced a lot of the key problem components then talking them down a bit would probably wind up being a fair deal.

Maintenance wise if the rad, water pump fails, transmission fluid etc
But the 540i can have failing parts well before 100k, just ask for service history records, work done etc.

IMO, it depends COMPLETELY on how the car was maintained. My 540i/6 has 151k on it, and it's basically good to go. I plan on replacing the timing chain guides, VCG's, etc in a few months, but since the PO took good care of it, it's got a lot of new components (Alternator, cooling system, brakes, shocks, suspension components, etc). If maintained poorly, it can certainly turn into a money pit. Check the maintenance history!

I paid 4500 for my 99 with 166k a year ago and all it needed was headlight adjusters.
