View Full Version : E39 Suspension Stance Pic Thread

I've had a few suspension set ups on the old e39 530. I'd like to share the side pics, and some basic thoughts on the ride. Fell free to add your car's a side shot, suspension / car info, and your review.
From the standard stock suspension the car was changed to Bilstein sport shocks and Eibach springs. This set up was great except for the heavy rake. That rear was embarrassingly high.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/Jackcat559/110-1023_IMG.jpg
From there H&R sport springs were swapped in with the Bilstien sport shocks. This rode as well, with a better stance. The front bumper did scrape less than the Eibach spring set up, but did bottom out on some aggressive speed humps. Either of these spring combinations will pretty much demand decent roads to drive on. Don't even think of these combos if your roads suck, and you know who you are.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/Jackcat559/IMG_3418.jpg
The most recent change is into a stage 3 Dinan suspension. It is pricey but well worth it. The car has a drivable stance, and handles like a dream. That front did settle down a bit more too.

Bilstein sport + Vogtlands. Gives a confident/tight ride and was a great upgrade from the stock non-sport suspension. The rake however, is unacceptable so I had to go with PSS9s which will be going on after this winter.

I'm running on BC Coilovers. Can't complain for the price of the coilovers and rides good. Haven't had a issue with them for the past 2 years.

Mine are Bilstein Sports with Vogtland Springs. Could go down a bit at the rear, but it doesn't bother me enough to do the bloody job again.

Schitzo I almost went with PSS9's. It really came dowm to a coin toss between Dinan and the Bilstein coilovers

FK Silverline Coilovers. Could go lower but for daily purposes and guest who go for a ride won't cut it.

yeah your last pic with the dinan stage 3 looks the best. looks just like my car on eibach pro kit springs. i don't have the rake that a lot of people describe with these springs so i'm guessing the PO did some modifications, maybe cut a coil back there, because my shocks are fine

Mine's on bilstein pss coilovers and the ride at this height isn't that great but it does handle nicely for sure. I'll probably get some BC coils at some point.

Thanks Narvin your car is pretty inspirational though. These coils are amazing for the money. I'm running 8k fronts and 6k rears and it rides beautiful... I have the fronts adjusted to 11s stiff on the front and like 13 on the rear. And barely rubs in the rear even with people in the rear. I would like to get a set of the 1.1.2 you just sold but in black

Damn I am so gonna cut the rears on this car.... Because i definitely want wider than these 9.5" wheels on the rears. Lately I have been thinking of the Style 95 wheels though as a nice OEM option...

Sounds like we have the exact(?) same suspension set up. I run 12k fr/10k rr as well, I am at 15 stiff front and 5 rear. I am finding it a bit too stiff however, and I am not even nearly as low as you. I am going to soften the rear up all the way because now It just slides everywhere. :lol
I am rubbing getting in/out of my underground garage, but once I am in a house with better approach angles, I am going to dump it a bit more in the front.

True story. All valuable lessons learned along the way though and that's what really counts. I show people before and after photos and no one believes it's the same car lol.

That's the same problem I had with them as well. The ride was really good so I can't complain but I will likely never do lowering springs again for that reason. For the price of the Bilstein/H&R combo I should have just gone coil overs but I was nervous about that when I had them installed back in 2008.

6k/5k is a little soft. Those would be better for an i6 car.
I have the 8k/6k spring rates for my 540 & couldn't be more satisfied.

Fortune Auto makes coilovers for the M5 and they are really nice. You could get a different spring rate for the front for the I6 cars. I am running the M5 fronts since I will be swapping my V8 in shortly. Since they don't have a touring application, I am having to put my own together using an E46/36 rear perch and then testing various springs. So far, I have 12k/8k setup and now need to find a rear lowered shock application. Hoping to have a solution for that shortly.
