i was replacing a steering tilt motor, when the ribbon cable on my cas2 must have gotten tugged on and shorted out. Next thing I knew, the cas was on fire and I was yanking it out in a hurry. So here I am, a toasted cas and a torn ribbon cable. I can fix the ribbon cable, but I'm worried about the cas.

I would like to buy a replacement on ebay for 140 bucks since its the right part number, but I know I'll have to program it. I have several different programmers for eeproms and various other things, but I don't know if those will work.

Can someone tell me how I can get this used cas to work? Keep your fingers crossed I didn't send a horrible shock wave through the rest of the system:(

looks like all I need to do is use the INPA suite to reprogram the vin on the cas. Hopefully thats correct. Anyone know for sure?

anyone? I downloaded INPA, what else will I need? Please any info is helpful.

I am trying to figure out what to do about the rolling code that is stored in the CAS? I tried to read the motorolla chip, but its dead. How can this task be acomplished?

Did you try going to dealer and getting a price for a new cas? We do them often and I dont think they are that expensive.

If that is quick and easy, and not too expensive, I'll do it. I'll call in the morning.

Dealer wants a ton to fix this!
Here is where I am at:

1. I have tried to update the used cas in winfkp, and it successfully updates, however, it does not change the VIN number. When I open up INPA, it still has the old vin.

2. I have tried to change the FA in NCS, but even after I enter the new FA parameters, and delete the old ones it still shows the old FA (DOES THE KEY NEED TO BE REMOVED WHEN I PROGRAM THE CAS?)
Any suggestions on how to change the vin in the cas? What am I doing wrong in ncs?

I know you can change the VIN in Tool32 but I haven't the first idea how to use it. Maybe you could use PA Soft to change the VIN too? I know someone that used it to change a VIN in an e39.

In tool32 I found something that translated to "Vin write". When I put in the vin number and run it, I get this for the result:

ERROR_ECU_CONDITIONS_NOT_CORRECT_OR_REQUEST_SEQUEN CE_ERROR

Any ideas?

I give up. I am going to solder to the cas, read the eeprom and search for the vin converted to HEX. I'll let you know if I can find it and change it.
UPDATE: MY eeprom reader is not working..FML

I'll paypal 100 bucks to whoever can figure this out.....

I need to write a new vin to a used cas. I've tried updating with winfkp, and I've tried using tool32 but haven't been able to change it.

Also, every time I program the cas in NCSexpert to change the FA, it programs, but when I exit and enter NCSexpert to read the FA...the old FA is there.

Walk me through getting the vin changed, and the FA changed, and I'll shoot you 100 bucks instantly. Let me know....

Normally you just fire up winkfp, select comfort mode, select cas2**, enter your desired VIN, and click program. If it says wrong ECU, pick another ZB number. At the end of programming it will flash the UIF data, and voila. But some say CAS must be aligned with DME (antitheft measure). If that's true then its gonna be a major problem and I can't help here.

Thats what I heard...but when I updated it with winfkp (without any error or wrong ecu), it would update but the vin remained the same?

Ok, I ended up buying a brand new cas...now all I need to do is synch it with the DME, any tips?

Hmm... dealer? But have you tried having your blown cas repaired, usually the damage from shorts is localized close to the connector, it's often just a cap+resistor and/or a driver chip. A nearby electronics repair shop should be able to do that. They might even be able to copy the whole flash 1-to-1.

Got the car started, but now my odometer reads 500+k miles? Any ideas? I'm guessing they didn't set the miles to zero on the cas? Is there any way to do this with INPA/NCS/ect...????

Did you ever sort this out?

I did. You can buy a used cas, but you have to solder to the chip and change the vin. Or buy a new cas, because the vin can't be changed via INPA, ect
