So recently, (last week) my wife and I visited all of Europe. We're talking from the Autobahn, to the Eiffel Tower, to the Last Supper painting by Da Vinci in Italy then back to the BMW Welt Musuem and BMW plant in Munich. During this drive I had a Opel Corsa. A modestly slow, gas sipper, that GM makes you sincerely believe with its small size it's a gas sipper. Terribly wrong. Average fill up was $95 at 1,72 per liter or $8.50 per gallon. For reference my M3 in the states is like $56 per fill up and I can go a little bit further on one tank of gas not to mention a lot faster. A lot faster.
This little Opel Corsa had a top speed of 180 km/h or 111 mph, on a downhill slope, in a Mercedes, BMW, or Audi's draft, while being towed by a Bugatti Veyron with the normal W16 pulled and replaced by lion eating gas turbines. This car was so incredibly slow it was a task to get up to 100 mph and maintain before traffic hit. I did a 120-130 km/h pull on a flat surface with not traffic. Yea about that. 30 seconds to do 10 km/h.
The kill part of the story begins in the end of the trip on the Autobahn. My wife and I had missed our flight, so we were able to enjoy another day in Germany. Great times as we were able to test some other cars out on the autobahn. Specifically a 335i Convertible and a new Mini Coupe S. Both are incredibly well stabled cars.
I was very delighted to drive the Mini Coupe. At this point I had a new rental. A Mini Cooper with a wonderful 90 hp engine. I won't lie but after driving this car for 12 hours straight. I sort of began to fall in love with it. The interior was horrid and had too much going on but it definitely felt and drove like a 1 series. Simply amazing.
So, on the autobahn, it was the beginning of the evening roughly 330 pm nearly 4 pm, and traffic was picking up quickly. Not enough space to do top speed runs in either car. Mini Coupe S managed 145 mph indicated and the 335i Convertible had more traffic so we stopped somewhere's around 130 mph indicated. Both cars had more power to continue going. The Mini coupe I estimated it could do an actual 150 mph and probably stop there. These cars are great at what they do. In fact so great, I intend to buy one in the future as a gas sipper. Very well balanced cars.
On the autobahn though, as we were heading towards our new flight. There was another mini cooper S. I'm in this slow base model and this one appears to be well modified. Exhaust, paint scheme, wheels, and sound. Very very exquisite Mini Cooper. And this thing literally, at 100 mph, downshifted, and pulled away from me like I was moving backwards. She had to have a good amount of power under the hood to pull like she did from 100 mph. That thing definitely had a pair and I wouldn't be surprised if it gave my M3 a run for it's money. Definitely a beatuful sound.
After all of this though, it made me a believer in not just ///M and BMW. But BMW Mini as well. These cars are incredibly good. This in comparison to anything and everything out there. Fantastic automobiles. Some parting shots taken throughout our trip. Ciau.
