So I start my car the other day and I'm greeted with a metal crunching sound similar to that of megaton transforming whilst in my engine bay. I get out and my belts are laying on the ground. Bad sign. In the picture you can see the crack. Lucky me, I get to replace the entire oil filter housing (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BG13&mospid=47485&btnr=11_1542&hg=11&fg=30).

What could cause this?
Ever happened to anyone else?

Sounds like someone tried to over torque the alt bolts or tried to pry on the alt at some point. OK its cast aluminum but it should not break. How long have you owned the car?

4 years now. Never replaced the alternator or power steering pump. I did notice that the alternator was jammed in pretty good when I was trying to remove it.
