View Full Version : Will a 225/45/17 fit a 17x8 properly?

Like the title says...

I currently have 235/40/17 Kumho Ecsta 712s on 17x8 rims and want to get a set of Kumho MXs, however there is no 235/40/17 size so that leaves me with 225/45s or 245/40s. From what I hear, MXs tend to be wider than what it actually says so a 245 would be like 255. I am already at the limit of with the 235s (already running a 12mm spacer) and rubbing the right fender during autox so I am ruling out the 245.

should fit the wheel fine. you can get this info by going to tirerack.com or the kumho website and look up the specs.

The 235/40 712 has a 9.5" section width and 24.4" diameter.

The 225/45 Mx has a 8.9" section width and 25.1" diameter.

The 245/40 Mx has a 9.9" section width and 24.8" diameter.

So you are talking a narrower tire in the 225/45 then your current 712's, but it's .35" inch taller, and this could cause you problems with deflection. The 245/40 is only .2" taller, which would be better, but is .2" wider also.(all of these number's are /2) The 225/45's will fit, and that's what's standard on the 96+ M3 Front, but I think you could get the 245/40's to fit.

Yeah, I know that running the 225/45 will be a skinnier and taller tire that what I have (even if marginally), but my concern was the rubbing issue that I was having with the 235/40s being exaggerated with 245/40s. I had thought that MXs were wider than Ecstas (given the same size), but looking at your numbers John, doesn't look like it. Can't really put a bigger spacer on there because I am rubbing the fender now with my 12mm spacer. Worse case scenario is I have to raise the car a bit because of the tender springs.

Thanks guys!

I posted the section width, not the tread width. The MX tread width is not listed on TR's site. My thoughts are that you are only clipping the outter fender when the suspension is compressed while the wheels are turned. A taller tire may affect you more then a wider. However, raising the front up will take care of the taller problem, but the wider may never go away.

And are you sure you have a 12mm spacer on there? We have the same wheels, and I'm running a 15mm spacer, and have more room then you.

Pretty sure it is a 12mm. Perhaps the difference in our front suspension geometries?

You don't have any street tires laying around that are in a 245/40 do you? Maybe I could check it out. Argggghhhh. I don't want to run the next autox with bald rear Ecstas again.

I have a 245/40 being used as a coffee table right now, and that bent MM-II sitting in the garage. You can have it mounted if you want for testing purposes. I just need the tire pulled back off so that I can ship the wheel off to be fixed. Come get it tonight, I'll be there under George H's car.

Awesome, thanks man. I can also drop off the Rogue Engineering Silencer Tips.
