timing chain guides as well.
theres a ton of DIY for that
PS pumps literally break at the mounting points. I'd keep them both handy.

Vanos seals kit from Beisan Systems.

The vanos doesn't really fail on the V8's, so I think you kind of went overkill. All it does is sound annoying.

Here is an article describing how the vanos in the M62TU fails.
I just followed this procedure on my motor. The results IMO are incredible... Feels and sounds like a different car.

If it has a manual transmission, check dual mass flywheel for slop and check out clutch condition.

wow, what did i get myself into. ha. no thats what i'm really thinking. well thanks for all the advice and input everyone. def a lot to take in and to consider for sure. it is the m6 package with the 6speed, and the little i drove it, it actually drove sweet other than little sluggish under like 2.5 grand. was a 1 owner too. the noise was embarrassing if you ask me. a bmw shouldnt sound like that, especially one i'm driving. none the less, i have quite a bit to do that i didnt plan on or take into concideration. though i got a great deal thus far on everything, doing all the work myself, so if things continue to go as well as they have, i'd be still be way ahead of the game when all is said and done. thanks again for everyones input and if anyone thinks of anything else, please due add your comments. thanks, Eric

Sell the replacement you just bought, buy some some Vanos seals and all the rest of the parts mentioned in this thread. Replacing a 108k mile engine because of normal Vanos tick, is simply an exercise in futility. No less for one with supposedly 90k miles. Unless you saw the car it came out of, and scanned that car with a diagnostic tool to check the miles, then that engine most likely doesn't have 90k miles on it.

PS: You don't have any M5, even less an M6 package. At most you have a sport package 99 540.

I would simply replace the tensioner, and skip the guides if they are intact.

okay, so i took most of everyone's advice, and planned on getting the engine in the car fixed, apposed to replacing. good news, i got more for the engine than i paid... bad news is, on the original engine, not sure what happened, but i put a jumper box, on the driver valve cover POS + post(it was loose if that helps), and grounded the jumper box to the frame, went to start car... car started and made a weird noice, bogged down, and shut off. i got out, checked under the hood, and the driver valve cover cracked almost straight across, and a 2" inch long, by 1/2" inch wide piece of the head cracked, and broke off, and kinda shot out of the side. i can look in, and can see the chain is still intact... havent taken valve cover off, but whats the point? i called local shop and they want over $2000 in labor ONLY.. the engine i had only cost me a grand!!! this is a kick in the arse.. so now its back to the drawing board, to find another used engine...

+1...mine has had the Vanos ticking for over 65k (175+k on the clock) and still pulls like a freight train (I have a lead foot)! :alrightbmw

That SUX man...sorry to hear that the timing chain failure happened after you decided to keep the damn original engine. Just plain SUX!! It's the reason board members are constantly checking the tc guide rails and fan clutch...

alright, update .. and thanks cooldude. so, i sold the 99 540i. and picked up a 2000 740i with the same problem as the other car as well as a timing issue.(other car needed several other things) 740 only needed a used engine. none the less i got a good deal on it.. $1200. (he dropped over $5000 into it 7 months ago(i have recipts).. it was fine till 2 weeks ago it cut out when his wife was driving.. he just wanted it gone. i than picked up a used engine, with new gaskets, and a new block. that much i can confirm. seeing as i can confirm that. i would only assume there was just more than that. none the less picked the engine up for $1000. me and a buddy going to do the swap in the next week or two. in the end everything worked out.
