Okay, so this is my first post. I've got a 2000 540i with a 6 speed. Recently the clutch went out on it and I am in the process of fixing that. While the transmission was out of the car and the driveshaft off, we discovered this

There is an alignment pin that comes out from the transmission and sits in the driveshaft. Now, I just need to know how necessary that pin is. Is it worth putting the transmission back in without it?
Any insights would be helpful. I'd really like to avoid buying a new transmission.
