you havent looked hard enough. it really depends what you want. standard offsets and clearance, or flush fitting wheels and possibly stretched tyres.
is the car lowered? will it be lowered?

Your question is too broad.
What's a good size for what? Comfortable ride? Good handling? Nice looking stance? Cheap tires?
When anything from 15x6.5 et46 to 19x9.5 et13 has been put on these cars before, there is really no answer until you give us more detail.

Yes its lowered, I want to be as flush as I can. And stretch I would like to stay with a 17" wheel. Just looking for some input from others and been looking at others set ups.

17x8.5 et20 with 215/40 or somewhere around there is a decent start for a flush look.

Your question is still a bit too broad. It basically comes down to a few things
1. Budget- how much are you looking to spend?
2. Style- are you looking for an OEM+ look or aftermarket?
3. Width/offset- offset concerns depend entirely on width, a very low or high offset on a narrow wheel isn't a big deal, its only really a problem you get into say an 8''+ wheel that offsets can determine whether the wheel will fit or not
Spend some time on the rides and styles subforum for ideas on what wheel you want to go with. Go to craigslist and find a set within your budget and search through threads that have asked if they will fit.
There have been countless threads on the topic of "will wheel X fit my e36 with a X'' drop?"
good luck in your search, put up pics when you're done!
