Hi guys, when I purchased my car from the BMW dealer he was saying that you don't see many BMW's in an airport parking lot due to the rust build up on the brakes. Anyway, I am going to Europe soon for a month, and have to drive to the airport. So I was wondering if anyone else has left their car parked for a while and had any issues after. Thanks.

BS, most I'd worry about is door dings.

Don't know if it helps, but I'm an airline pilot and park in the lot 4 days a week. Haven't had a problem yet. And I see quite a bit of BMW's parked there as well... This is the first time I have heard this. Hope it helps.

The only two door dings I have came from the airport parking lot. :-(

Rust will happen if the car is not driven for a while and there is high humidity.

Remember that when you use the brakes, the rotors are polished nice and clean. Bare metal will form rust.

I've seen M-B cars at a dealership outside storage lot and they all had rusty rotors.

If you get rust, drive it some using brakes frequently. Nice and shiny again.

BMW or not, it is a car. You can't protect it from everything.

I simply don't end of story.
I will take a shuttle or taxi because my BMWs mean something to me.
I still have my 97 M3 which I plan to show at a car show this coming weekend. my 335 never...
If you view it as a driver then who cares but if it is something special then no way.
The majority of door dents I have in other vehicles are some airport parking lots and Walmart parking lots...

Wouldn't it be cheaper to leave the car home and find a ride to the airport?

I mean, airport parking isn't usually the cheapest option for any extended length of time, at least, in my previous experiences.

A month's worth of airport parking fees would certainly have some alternate competition, I would think...

Just try to park as far away as you possibly can from everyone else. Everywhere I park, I park far. Sometimes there are assholes that just park next to you even if there are tons of spots elsewhere. You can always get a car cover????

Rust is perfectly normal and is just on the surface and is scrubbed off as soon as you use the brakes.

I leave mine at the airport 2-3 weeks at a time, a number of times during the year. Rain, sleet, snow, hot weather etc... Never an issue and so far no door dings. Just fold the mirrors in. She always starts up without hesitation.

As mentioned before, as soon as you start driving again the rust will quickly disappear.

Take a cab or one way rental , how can you leave your car in airport for a month. Its defintely not safe

Some airport locations do not allow one way rental dropoffs at the airport (Cab companies complain as it affects their business and enact a rule to ban it). Cabs can be very inconvenient if you live far or travel at times when cabs are hard to grab.
To some people, a BMW is just another car, nothing special. A car is meant to serve one's purposes not the other way around. I would say airport parking is safer than parking outside your house when you are gone.

Especially when it's a lease with full replacement coverage. :)

Wife got a new beetle and since we live close to the airport and parking is cheap we parked for the week, wouldn't you know it that there was a ding on the fender the dealer was nice enough to do a paint less removal cause he felt sorry for us. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the replies, however I'm not flying out of an international airport, but a private airport, so door dings I do not think that I have too be too concerned over. And regarding if I feel my car is special, its hard to say, I find it weird to get emotionally attached to non-living objects, however my father has a few cars that he loves more than me, especially his '67 Camaro SS, but his everyday x5 not really seeing that every few years when his lease is up he gets a new one. But I only have the one car, I do take excellent care of it and do not neglect, because it is a awesome car...and for resale value haha

I agree. Taking good care of one's possessions is one thing, being emotionally attached is another. I can't get attached to non living things either, although I did miss my e36 when I sold it after 10 years of ownership, being that it was my first new car and carries me through all my life events since after graduation. No where close to how you'd miss a friend or pet though.

Your BMW parked for a month will probably have a dead battery when you come back to it.

Get a ride to the airport...

I'm always parking at TF Green and you can usually spot my E90 in parking lot B about the 4th floor and the last parking spot as far away from the elevator....also parked closest to the side where nobody can park next to me....LOL, I hate door dings.

How is leaving it parked at home any better! unless you buy a tether of course.

And my point was that not many people do when leaving it at home either, so same thing.
