Does this service light mean that my front brakes need to serviced at 38000 miles?

and does this one mean the rear brakes need to be serviced in the next 7000 miles? that 7000 mile number hasn't changed in sometime.

Am I totally wrong here?

Not at, but in another 38,000/7,000 miles. It is an estimate and it adjusts so it can remain stuck at the same value esp. when it gets close to 0. If in doubt, do a visual inspection. In any case, when they are close to the minimum safe thickness, a red brake alert will show in the dash

Excellent, thank you.

I'm still under warranty for the time being. Do you know if the fifth year starts January 1st or does BMW base that date on when the vehicle was originally purchased?

starts when the car is 1st sold or put in service (e.g. loaners, exec demos, etc).
