Guess all my recent "spirited" driving pushed a motor mount over the edge- the drivers side one is either seperated, or a bolt(s) gone, cause it's hopping :rolleyes
Checked the write-up/vid over on E38.org, swap seems ridiculously easy, anybody got any tips/tricks to add? Where do y'all get 'em from? oembimmerparts? Ebay? I'm gonna go ahead and do both, might as well.......

We should have them check out our prices at EACeuroparts.

Replace with OE. When changing the mounts I'd recommend while the left one is out take the opportunity replace the six "O" rings on the oil filter housing hoses (2 between the mount bracket and block, 2 on the hoses on the mount bracket and 2 on the hoses in the filter housing). Remove the fan to be on the safe side.

Will do!

Thanks for the tips! My car's PO owned an Indy shop, completely rebuilt my engine last year, so I'm not anticipating any leaks or noises or issues to address anytime soon. That being said, I'll certainly check the area real good for seeps and hoses for age.
Rather than fighting the fan, be easier to just pop the shroud up real quick? I noticed in the vid they didn't even address that, tho that was the passenger mount....

Only hard part is getting to the bolts from the top, need several extensions and may need to move the oil filter housing to move the oil supply lines. AC lines on other side are also in the way. I once dropped the bolt and it lodged in the bucket areas of the arm that came from the engine to the mounts. Had to fish it out with a clothes hangar.
Otherwise, easy job overall.

A wobble extension helps with the top bolt on the motor mount. Wow - those rarely leak. I wouldn't mess with them unless they were clearly leaking.

All "O"rings and seals have a life. Even if they're not leaking, if I'm replacing mounts at $100 each, and have the engine up, another 30 minutes and $10 for "O" rings, I know they're new, I got good silicone grease on them and the fasteners now have anti-seize.
Driftin Daddy, have you removed the fan since you've had it? Does it have anti-seize on the threads (male/female)? Since your engine was recently rebuilt have you done a base line compression test and recorded the readings?

Yeah, I suppose any o-ring has a finite (as opposed to infinite) service lifes but for all practical purposes the sealing lifetime of these o-rings, fixed between parts that don't move, is indefinite. Mine have lasted 12 years and 170K miles so far with absolutely so sign of leakage.
Did your o-rings actually leak or did you replace them as "preventative" maintenance? In 8 years on various e38 forums, I've seen only one or two others who have replaced any of the o-rings on the support. There are zillions of posts about replacing the mounts, but I haven't seen anyone else who advocates changing these o-rings at the same time. There may have been more who have had leaking o-rings, but I searched extensively and I only found one person (might have been you) who even understood that the oil lines from the filter canister connect to the engine support rather than directly to the block, and that there were o-rings between the support and the block.
The reason I searched this before is that I thought for awhile that mine were leaking, because I continued to have oil dripping from the left engine support after I replaced the upper timing cover gasket. It turned out that the new timing cover gasket was leaking, and that stopped after I used the valve cover spacers (special tool 83300493364) to properly compress the timing cover gaskets.
When I did my motor mounts, it looked like it would take a bit longer 30 min to do the support o-rings, if only to clean up the oil that spilled. I suppose you minimize that by draining the oil filter canister first. In any event, removal of the motor mount is so easy that I'd wait until the o-rings leak before fixing something that isn't broke, and seems unlikely to break.
I used Corteco mounts for about $60 each. I know many on this and other forums have used them without problems or regrets.

Cort is OEM
My OE BMW mounts did not say "Cortico" on them - did yours?
Cortico says they specialize in parts for the "Independent Automotive Aftermarket in Europe" (http://www.corteco.com/en/home/), and that they sell "OEM quality" spare parts (http://www.corteco.com/en/press/news-single/?tx_ttnews[tt_news]=573&cHash=1febba782f59d16fa7ae130d5fc811e4).
Cortico sources parts from Vibracoustic, who they say is "the world’s leading technology specialist for vibration control modules and components for the international automotive industry," but I can't find anything that says they make original equipment motor mounts for BMW.

Corteco seems to be OE. Lemforder, trw, behr, are all also OE providers. I have a pair downstairs. One has a corteco label, the other does not. Quality appears to be good.

Just as an update, I went with Uro motor mounts, got both off Amazon for $52 shipped. Per the Uro website:
'All ÜRO Parts come with an industry leading 24 month unlimited mileage warranty against defects in materials and workmanship'
So two years/unlimited mileage, that's plenty of warranty for me, at 1/4 the price of OE. I would've gotten em from ECS, but y'all's website showed 'em backordered for who knows how long..... :(

Im sorry....maybe there was a sale or coupon or something. I usually try to stick to places that have coupon codes WITH free shipping.

In case anyone cares, I cancelled my order at Amazon (they e-mailed me apologizing for not being able to ship either item for weeks) and went with Autohaus, they actually had the LH one on the shelf. Dunno what's up with the seemingly worldwide backorder of the RH one, but I don't _need_ it, yet......

It usually the drivers/lhd mount that goes out and rips first. All that torque pulls up on this mount, while the passenger side just gets compressed a little. Hence it lasts longer.

Yeah, with my foot on the brake and some gas in D, my engine hops like I tazed it :D:rolleyes
But wouldn't the reverse seem true? The "always in demand" LH being harder to find, than the right?
Doesn't matter, back to your regularly scheduled afternoon......
I'm off to change my alternator :shifty

I just replaced mine last night. Got them from autohaus. Driver's side came out in 2 pieces while the other one looked like it could go another 50k miles. The car definitely idles smoother.

Yes, that plus sloppy oil filter changes and PS leaks, the oil lays in the mount webbing and causes rubber deterioration. Which is why you'll notice they're generally swollen.
