A few weeks ago, I had a service light on. I had only bought my car, used 07 335i coupe, a few weeks earlier from a non BMW dealer.

I took my car to the closest BMW dealer where they changed the brake fluid. They also said that my transmission pan seal was leaking and I needed to change it at the cost of $600+. I said no thanks.

I found an independent BMW only mechanic, Performing Imports in Roswell, GA. Took the car in this morning and they showed me the transmission. No leaks at all - bone dry. They fixed the infamous squeaky brakes and sent me on my way with most of my money still available for mods.

Watch out for the dealers

Complaining about a non BMW dealer misdiagnosing a BMW? :confused
Not all dealers are created equal.
Reminds of of someone saying "Beware of the Lasagna at the Chinese Buffet".

My bad. Poor sentence structure. BMW dealer tried to sell me a $600 transmission service that was totally unnecessary

Most people just pay whatever they quote them at the dealer. It's always good to get a second opinion/crawl underneath yourself.
