Found a guy local in Dubuque, very reasonable, and had next day turn around time.

He is a motorcycle specialist, but loves a new challenge.

Very nice, sir. Should be much better with cleaning/staying clean. When I was 17 I powdered mine BMW blue. Looked okay on the M60, but on an otherwise stock engine bay? Nah. Looks good. Will hide dirt better than the whitish grey from the engine covers. That's the color I'd been thinking about.

He charged me $100.

Not sure if thats going to be his price...as these were the first he ever did.

Ill let him decide if he wants to correct me. (I sent him a thread link)

He also said it was fun and would be willing to do anything I ship to him.

Was very helpful in the process and explaining things.

Thanks for finding a guy.
That was my biggest hang-up about doing the job.
I will get a set from Nick and have them done up soon.

Great pro job Ice.

What is powder coating really? Obviously its a paint process, but why is it so different so as to withstand very high heat?

Anyway, I like the black-silver mix. I went with blue.

Nice, man, that looks badass. Silver isn't a color I would have thought to have the valve covers powder coated in but it looks great in tandem with the rest of the engine bay. Looks miles and miles better than the rotting cosmoline we're all so used to.

What's up with the Fast & Furious intake though? That thing looks like it could've been taken right out of the hot-pink S2000 from the first movie.

Mine were $100 as well, so it sounds like that should be around the going rate for most.

It depends if you do the prep work first. the sand blasting almost doubles the cost. $100 should be just handing the covers over without prep. All prepped and you can get it done alot cheaper, especially if it's running in a batch job.

+1 my local guy also will do valve covers for $100

I really like the finish the ICEman has, Silver Vain? Will look into it.

Was contemplating either Silver, Gold, Crinkle Black or this Silver Vain now...

I also will be matching my calipers the same color...

Really leaning towards Gold :devillook

My guy charges the same. But he wines and moans every time due to how dirty these covers get. He blasts them and bakes them in the oven to get them to off gas before he coats them.

I was just going to ask, did they off gas the bare magnesium first?

When I do the chains in the spring I think I'm going to have the timing covers done in the silver vein.

He media blasted, sanded some inperfections, and pre heated, before application.

Great pro job Ice.

There are several types of powder coats, but I think the polyester is the most common.

Its applied electro-statically, then heated in an oven to melt and fuse the powder particles into a homogeneous finish.

I did the same finish on my Sport VC's it was called silver/ black hammered, it works better at hiding casting imperfections.
