I recently moved to the Pitt. I have seen a couple of e38's out here. So anyone on the board in metro Pittsburgh area? Hit me back. I need some referrals for stuff *(car wash places, underbody coating for snow season?, indies, etc.).

Thanks,
Kahlil

I'm up in Erie, but usually make it down to Pittsburgh every week or so for work. I used to live in Pittsburgh, so I'm pretty familiar with the area and can probably provide some advice.

Thanks for replying halfwindows. I will definitely need some advice around here. I'll PM you my personal info. Sorry for the delayed response but I tend to get really busy most days with the new job & relo & all.

But deggone only one reply?? Fellow e38's where y'all at?? lol! I'm guessing maybe most of y'all haven't seen my cry for help on here? :) I've never met pizzaman, but I think his or someone's sig says they're here in Pittsburgh too. So show yourselves :)

Yep, I'm, just south of Erie in a small town of off I-79 called McKean. I never make it down to Pittsburg but occasionally I end up in the Grove City or Cranberry area. If your ever up in Erie and need service the BMW dealer, New Motors, does fantastic work, in a timely manner.

kool! thanks for the info apexilude.. have you had an undercoating done? i'm really concerned about the durability of my car in the cold/snowy weather here. most ppl i have talked to here (non e38 owners) all seem to hava this disposable car thinking & believe the best thing to do is lease or simply replace their car every few years. i plan to keep mine for several years

kool.. you ever get to pittsburgh?.. have no idea where pottsville is.. will need to locate on a map

currently staying in robinson, but am hoping to move to the south hills area

I didnt drive the e38 in the winter. But we had my wife's Versa done we we bought it. They did a great job. Keep in mind BMW did a great job sealing these cars originally. But if it is a concern just stop by your local Ziebart for a quotee.

I haven't called them yet, but will be along with one other place. What can I expect in prices?

I have been told that if you car wasn't undercoated when new, there isn't much point to having it undercoated 10 years later. If you undercoat rust, it is still going to propagate.

I also find it funny when every Pittsburgh gets a heavy snowfall the city pratically shuts down, yet up in Erie we just continue with our daily lives since we always have heavy snow.

That's the first thing I noticed when I moved to Erie from Pittsburgh 7 years ago. Everybody just goes about their day as usual even after FEET of snow overnight. I actually kind of enjoy that. Also, the snow removal up here is REALLY good compared to down there. Prior to Pittsburgh I lived outside of Philly, and it's even worse there. If they call for 6" of snow, people clean out the grocery stores of bread and milk.

OP, I worked in Robinson for several years.

Really??? Shutdown in Pittsburgh?? I never would have guessed that for up here, but then again I'm sure it doesn't shut down like it does in Atlanta, :) So do you guys get winter tires for your car? or store it for the winter?

What's up slim? All i can say is this: It ain't been easy: trying to sell home in Atlanta in where we're flipped; paying more for less in a house up here; temp living in a hotel until family can get moved here; working my butt off at new job so much have little time for anything else & then the ultimate slap in the face happened just last nite: some fool stole the bmw emblem off my hood!!! WTF??

BUT I like it here dude! It's surprisingly scenic. VERY, VERY hilly terrain & I'm loving my new job :)

Though in a lot of ways I do miss home :(
Hope y'all holding it down there. I'll be back in town next wkend of the 13th to move family here, then it will be final.

This will actually be my first winter I've ever driven a car that wasn't all wheel drive. I just bought my E38 about a month ago to replace my Audi A6. I did buy some nice michelin snow tires for it, though.

Snow tires?? Is that strongly recommended here?

I would. I was on the PA turnpike last year driving near breezewood. There was a pretty serious snow storm and the car would litterally not move. Traffic was backed up. With traction control on the wheels would not spin. With off, they just spun. It was probably the only time I was nervous in snow. I grew up driving in New England winters, midwest snow storms.
I would definitely get snow tires, they are cheap and you are in the snow belt. Blizzaks are great.
