Found this here on the forums

Alright, according to my cop friend... tint on the front windows, passenger and driver, are ILLEGAL. He said of course it is up to the officer to choose to pull you over to give a fix-it ticket. Most won't unless it is really dark, 20% and darker, and they feel like giving the ticket.

Now whether it was tinted at the dealer? It doesn't matter. Tint is tint. He said that just because it came from a dealer it DOES NOT make it LEGAL. One example he gave is that some dealerships do not put the front license plate on (used cars mostly).. in CA.. it's still illegal whether you did it, or the dealer.

Hope this helps.

Can i tint the car darker in the back, and lighter in the front?

Which tint makes the E34 look better, all around or front ones clear?

Darker tint, or lighter tint.

Base color is Oxford green btw.

The best way to tint the windows to make an oxford green car look better is to repaint the car another color.

STFU. Painting the car won't tint the windows.

Green cars are where it's at. Obviously you were born without taste.

50% front, 20% rear

I don't do 5% because I enjoy seeing out of my windows at night and in rain/snowstorms.

Actually, that depends how good/bad you are with a spray gun.

And my 525 is oxford green, when I bought it I thought it was black under the dirt. It's a hideous color. Even if it is the same as those ultra-rare Olympic Editions that are worth sooooooo much money now.

Depending on the state you live in, the laws are different.
I live in California and it is NOT legal to tint any windows from the drive's seat forward with any tint darker than 70% (i think that what it comes out to) = optically clear; they just want to make sure that the driver is always visible at all times. Though the clear tint may seem useless, it still offers great UV protection but does jack for heat. You can pretty much black out all the windows from the driver's seat back.
As far as looks, its all personal preference. In San Francisco, the police officers are pretty strict about dark tint, no front license plates, etc but it also really depends on what type of car you are in, unfortunately.
I have numerous friends who are in law enforcement and they say that they will probably not pull you over JUST for tinted windows........though it has happened to me
:(
If you do ge a ticket, it is a repairable infraction. They will require you to remove the tint from the front windows and then have another officer inspect it for the corrections made. That officer will then initial and note their badge/star number on the back of the original citation. Then you send in your citation with the processing fee and you will be all set......really sux, is a waste of time and is a pain in the a$$.
The interior color of your vehicle helps a lot because it helps reflect light. If you have black/dark interior, you will most likely have to go with a lighter tint. If you have a light color interior like tan, white or light grey, you can probably get a slightly darker tint because it will still have a decent amount of light in the cabin.

Example:
My opinion for a oxford green 4door car with parchment interior (my favorite combination :D )
35% all around?..
And befriend a cop who will sign off your tix when/if you need him.

I prefer all the same color of tint through out a vehicle to give it the smooth and consistent look unless it a huge car like a truck or suv.

I used to work at a tint shop and that is what I would say people mostly do after speaking with them. I, in no way, recommend tinting the front windows to customers because i dont want them coming back to me crying about them getting tickets; not my car.

With that said, i drive a white diesel truck that has dark grey interior. limo (5%) tint over the factory tinted rear windows and 20% on the front windows.
O, AND 30% on the entire windshield :nono
