First; before posting this question I searched a lot, but without luck, earlier discussed transmission problems seems that have different symptoms.

Hi All,
I joined BF quite a while, but never really post that much. I'm from Amsterdam (The Netherlands), and bought myself an ’99 740i (M62) two months ago. Really like the car, expect for some issues I have with the transmission.

Basically I have two problems, most likely related:
-An rattle/ticking noise coming from the underside/middle of the car. (more precise; I think from the transmission/torque converter)

-And even more annoying, When I switch between Reverse and Drive, I need to wait a few seconds before it selects a gear. When I hit the throttle too early, it will abrupt “falls into the gear” which gives quite an shock.
Sometimes this also happens when I am driving in the city, and it stays in drive. (Not that often, sometimes). Especially when I am slowing down for a traffic light and reaccelerate before the car is standing still.

I have changed my oil and oil filter (5000 km ago), didn’t really help. (although I have the idea it is slightly better, but I am not sure. I did the oil change when I owned the car less than an week).

Does anybody have an idea or suggestions. All comments are very much appreciated!

sounds like it may be going into failsafe mode, i would check your fluid level before going any further.

Thank you for your reply,

I'd checked the fluid level and it is okay...
Any other suggestions? Would it worth the try an oil flush?

Hello and welcome.
Rattle could be bad cat.
I would flush tranny and change fluid and filter.

Good luck.

Are you able to upload a video of the noise? Does the noise increase frequency with engine speed, road speed, etc? Can you hear it while driving with all windows closed and the radio off?

The noise combined with the delayed reverse engagement does sound like low fluid/clogged filter. How did the old fluid look when you changed it?
