I'm looking at a 1995 540i a/t w/ 200K miles, clean title, original motor. The sellers best offer is $1900. What do I need to look out for? Please advise.

Either it's not a '92, or it's not a 540. 540s were only offered for the '94 and '95 model years here in the US. I'd be more worried about it being on the original trans than the original engine; the life expectancy of the typical BMW slushbox is somewhere around 200K.

Taken it still has the original tranny. What's the average rebuild cost?

It's generally a better idea to source another transmission from the junkyard.

It's also common practice to swap out the auto for a 5 or 6 speed transmission, which is a process that has been discussed and shown many times before.

I would definitely consider if it was just up to me but my wife does not want to drive stick shift.

My v8's trans is at 240k and starting to make noise. My wife can drive and my daughter will learn.

Parts cost here, if you're inclined.

Not a bad price for the car if it's been kept.?

Post the last 7 of the VIN and I'll pull the build sheet for you.
