View Full Version : Bay Area - End of Season / Summer Meet - October 14th

AquilaBMW
09-04-2012, 10:27 AM
A lot of people have been asking that we organize another Bay Area Meet - something like we did August of last year.

So... Let's Git 'Er Done!!!!

After watching all the other more recent meets, it seems at the end of it, Saturday is actually turning out to be a challenge. Seems folks have more activities to do that day than initially thought.

So... we are back to Sunday for a meet. And this time, we have TONS of advance notice. I have selected October because Northern California experiences an Indian Summer in this month. So, it will our last chance this year to get some driving done in the Sun!

I hope everyone can attend and make this another successful meet. All models are welcome as it seems to be more fun that way and people can compare notes. If misswin want to fly down, she can drive Dirty Diana to the meet :D.

Only choices here are the location and we can vote in advance. Either we meet at Peter Pan BMW again, or we meet in San Rafael. The most popular / most voted location will decide the route. Voting will end September 30th.

EDIT AS OF SEPTEMBER 25th, 2012 - PLEASE READ:

After talking with a number of attendees and realizing we may have to split the group due to age differences, I decided that I can forgo the NFL for one Sunday to hang out with friends of similar interest - BMWs! :D

While this may not jive with everyone, I think it is better for the group as a whole and that we all stick together. I have enjoyed all BMW meets regardless of the age of the attendees and I think part of the fun of these meets is to be able to share some time together and share stories and projects, etc.

Also, some people want to bring their kids, significant others and friends to the meet and how welcoming will we be if we decide to say adios to the "younger" members of our community.

With that said, the Blah Food 'N Football part will be deleted - sorry. We can still do that afterwards to catch the afternoon games if anyone is interested.

Please read the revised itinerary. THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING !!!

Based on the votes received, we seem to be leaning towards Peter Pan in Burlingame as our location, I am going to move ahead with Peter Pan for now....

Date: Sunday October 14th, 2012 @ 09:00 AM

Locations:

Peter Pan BMW Service Center - 1625 Adrian Road, Burlingame, CA. We will provide some refreshments at this meeting venue.

After a very brief Meet and Greet, we will commence the drive no later than 9:00 AM.

The drive will be circular to end back up at the same location in time for a quick roll call, check in and gathering. We will have a meet and greet, Swap meet, Chat Meet, Hugs and Kumbaya and all that.

After the meet, we will have the Meet 'N Greet Lunch BBQ at Peter Pan with what I can only describe as some of the best darn BBQ this side of Texas. We will have it here so that EVERYONE can be a part of this.

Please note the BBQ will be $20 Per plate, including gratuity. This is to cover most of the cost of the Caterers.

So, the schedule for Burlingame will look something like this:

08:30 AM - For Meet & Greet.

9:00 AM - Drive Time

12:00 PM - Return Meet & Greet / Swap Meet / Kumbaya Group Time

1:00 PM - Lunch at Peter Pan Location.

5:00 PM - (This can happen sooner) Disperse, wave good byes, hugs and all that stuff.

Night Time - Party in ????? (Wherever we decide!), time to get your groove on.

Any questions, let me know. Here is what we did last year:

Nah, I don't have money for another set. Bought a DD a few months ago so I'm low on fun money. But aren't we all?

Voted for the place that gets food in my belly faster. The BMW Service center was a nice treat last time, but a little crowded for the usual turnout we have IMO.

I can guarantee the former (I am leaning towards Larkspur because we can easily hop onto HWY1 and get a GREAT view of the Pacific.) However Half Moon Bay, just west of Peter Pan, is quite the sight as well. But I still have a few months to go before I can enter any bar... :shifty

The date should work for me.

The Pt. Reyes/Drakes beach drive was awesome but the roads were bumpy. The Half Moon Bay drive was equally twisty but much smoother, so I prefer HMB. I'm also partial to meet up in Burlingame as that gives me 1 hour head start in the drive back home.

Okay.... so, since it seems Peter Pan is going to be the location we are using, I am upping the ante a little bit.

Sunday is of course Football day, and I am a football myself. So, with this in mind. I am going to open up my buddy's Bar in Redwood City and will be arranging catering with my neighbour who is a professional caterer who does barbeque / smoked stuff.

So..... after the drive and a brief Meet and Greet at Peter Pan, we shall mosey on down to Redwood City and meet up at 2411 Broadway where we will open up the Bar and show the games. We have a HUGE SCREEN for the main game.

We will also provide a BBQ Catered Lunch. For those interested in the lunch, it will be $20 Including gratuity and you can pay when you get there and EAT! I tested the ribs today and they are DO DIE FOR!

Let me know what you guys think. I am going to edit the first page with this plan.

Cheers,

Also guys, if you need to bring something with you maybe the day / night before but would like to store it so you can drive around un-hindered, my garage is available for storage. So, if you want to bring items for someone who will be there and want to deliver later in the day or overnight store it - let me know.

Also, you can update the thread with what you have available or would like to offer so people know what will be available at the meet.

Host the picture on a site (picasa, photobucket, even facebook). Right click the picture, and click 'copy image URL.' Paste that in the signature box. But more than likely you will have to crop or resize your picture. You can use various editing software or even Paint to do that.

Not sure where we are on attendance right now.... the list has been growing on different sub forums, so it's anybody's guess right now. However, it is looking to be a GREAT turnout for this event.

I am going to confirm the lunch BBQ this week - so that is SO gonna happen.

IMPORTANT: For the Food 'N Football lunch, please note that anyone that is going has to be 21 or Over. If there are a large number of attendees who are not, I need to make different arrangements now. If you are under 21 - just PM and let me know.

Are you the only one bringing a Touring? Hmmmm. Even though the 535 is a lot more fun to drive, I may need to convince the wife to trade for the weekend so I can represent. Especially cause Michael and Jed are sooo lame and don't have Tourings anymore.

Hey guys, I know that Michael has been talking to a few of you (including myself) who are under 21, making the lunch after the meet an issue. I was quite suprised, I thought PorscheH6 and I were the only ones.

I just wanted to throw this out there to relieve some of the pressure off of Michael, and thought this would be best decided as a group. I propose that all of the under 21 people split off and grab lunch elsewhere. My reasoning behind this:

1) I'm assuming the vast majority of the group is over 21, so I wouldn't want us to spoil their fun
2) We won't be under 21 forever; PorscheH6 and I could even join you guys as soon as December if we have another meet then
3) There will always be forum members under 21 on here (though not quite as much as all the 3er kiddos), so I don't want this issue to come up every year and ruin the fun (especially after we start drinking legally)
4) We will splend plenty of time with you guys beforehand, and it's not like we go to bars every meet, so it's not like we're being permanently excluded

Let me know what everyone thinks.

Hi Nate -

That is very big of you man. This is one day, one Sunday out of the year for all of us to meet and have a great time. I personally don't like the idea of splitting the group up just because of age difference. It has never been a problem in the past and should not be a problem now.

I have always enjoyed these meet regardless of age and part of the fun of the meet is to be able to hang out and share stories after the drive and catch up. Sometimes, we don't see each other for a year or so. Also.... we got guys from WA joining us and other distant locations.

I am willing to give up Football Sunday for ONE DAY. I am sure the NFL Gods will forgive me for this... :D

SO ... with that said. The BBQ will take place at Peter Pan - out in the open like traditional BBQ's should be anyway. That way we can all stay together till we disperse.

Cheers,

Michael

Cool... just update the thread with (+ Lunch) by your name so I know. Like I said, the plan is we will have a caterer on site so no ones need to go off anywhere and we can all spend time hanging out.

Nate is an old friend and it doesn't make sense for us to split up after the drive - the whole purpose of the meet is for people to all get together and talk cars and such. No worries, plans have been made so that everyone can enjoy the meet.

Alright, i'm looking forward to learning a lot from you guys.

Motorcycle or bicycle? I've got a buddy who rides fixed gear all the time in sf, keeps getting hit by cars(third time now). Sold his s50 swapped super modded e30 to buy a carbon fiber super nice bike only to get hit by cars. The world is telling him something, he just isn't listening.

Nate - As a former rider, I can only imagine what you went through and are still dealing with. Sorry to hear that man.

Guys... if you never came off a bike before, you cannot imagine what road rash feels like. OUCH! I hope you can still make it buddy, but either way, keep us posted and heal well.

UPDATE ON EVENT!

Today, I did a dry run of the course for the BimmerCon drive. Oh My My My !!!!

The course will be HWY 92 to HWY 35 (Skyline). We will then head south on HWY 84, and then we turn off at Pescadero highway and head to PCH / HWY 1 from there.

At the early time of day, the roads should be relatively empty, this should be fun. We will take a quick break at Pescadero State Beach, the come up North on PCH (By the Ocean) for a few miles and take HWY 84 North back to Alice's and then take HWY 35 back. We will be heading in the opposite direction, so traffic will be on our side.

GUYS - SERIOUS NOTES HERE! HWY 35 going south is pretty smooth, however these are all wooded areas so there might be wet spots or damp areas. BE CAREFUL. You are also up in the hills, so little room for errors. HWY 35 is a pretty smooth road with undulating turns, but some of them are Double Apex Turns and decreasing radius turns which might catch you by surprise.

Driver carefully. I know we want to have fun, but I do not want anyone wrecking. Remember, it's not a race or a rally, it's a fun drive with fellow Bimmerheads! HWY 35 will test your suspension and brakes, and then the game goes up on Pescadero Highway. This highway climbs up and has sheer drops. On the way up, it is very curvy and VERY tight. Don't go crazy here. Remember, your friends are in front and behind you. Once again, there are double apex turns - some very tight and some even off camber.

As it descends, it does open up and about 10 miles from the coast there is a great run you can blast through outside Pescadero itself.

Please... remember to respect the road and people in residential areas. Have fun, but be safe so we can all share HAPPY stories!

I will tell you one thing, you will SO WANT LUNCH after the run. It is a great work out!

Here are a few pictures of my dry run.

Intersection of HWY 92 and HWY 35, be cautious when turning as it is at the top of a hill.

we're actually meeting at the peter pan service dept. It's a stand alone building away from the dealership. It'll be obvious when you see it. Not sure if the actual address is posted in this thread.

here's what google says:
1625 Adrian Road
Burlingame
http://www.peterpanbmw.com/service-department.aspx

Someone please chime in if that's not correct!

I read that it's at the Sevice Dept. building too, the actual dealership is South a few miles in San Mateo. So unless someone tells me different, I'll be heading to 1625 Adrian Rd. (it's right up the street from Gokart Racer )

Missed the drive, but Ryan and I still had a good time.

The food was great (had three helpings!), so were the people and cars.

Michael's e38, and my POS wagon:

I apologize for stopping and letting the rest of the caravan go ahead of me on Skyline 35.....car was in limp mode. Pulled a code P1351 (misfire cylinder 5 with fuel cutoff). Great turnout with lots of E38s, E39s, tourings, etc. Thanks to AquilaBMW for setting it up.

WOW! What an incredible day it was. Before I get to far, let me start by saying quite a few BIG THANK YOU’s to a bunch of people.

First and foremost, THANK YOU ALL for attending this event. It was awesome to hang out with everyone – from the drive to the BBQ lunch. Everyone was truly on their best behavior and I think we represented the BMW community very well.

It was amazing to meet members of the forums that I had only talked to via the boards or even on the phone occasionally. A Big SALUTE to all the travelers that showed up from as far as Vancouver – Paul, and our good ole friends from the PNW – Jeff, Artur, Mac, Zac, and a number of others, not forgetting Mac’s son who even joined us on the drive. There were other travelers as well who made brave journeys through the night like my men Bill and Jed. And of course, not to take away from friends who had to wake up at the crack of dawn on a football Sunday from places like the East Bay, Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton, and the North Bay like San Rafael, etc.

I am bad with names and I met more people than my short memory can handle, so I ask your forgiveness if I don’t remember your name. But please, drop me a line and let’s shake hands all over again. It is a great community and I hope we all stick together – which we proved we could do on the drive.

A BIG THANKS to the staff of Peter Pan BMW as well. It turns out there was a small group of staff members there on Sunday and they welcomed us with no problems. David the Parts Manager even let us use the restrooms inside the showroom and come hang out for a bit before our drive down to Pescadero Beach. If you haven’t been to Peter Pan, you should check out their new Ultra Modern Service and Parts Center in Burlingame. I usually get my parts from Tom Dechaine who is very helpful and quite knowledgeable – he is a true enthusiast actually.

Many Many Thanks to Texas BBQ as well, thanks to Frank, his son Austen and Tony who served up the delicious BBQ meal we had for lunch. I am still licking my fingers. Hopefully next time around, more of us can stay for lunch.

It was incredible how many people actually showed up for the drive that early. I got there with Jed and Bill around 8:45 AM and there were a number of people there already. We had about 30 cars on the drive and to keep it simple, we split into two groups. The Churn and Burn group as we call those fast and furious drivers, and then the Cruiser Group for those of us that like to see the sights without fast blur! LOL!

We set off at about 9:40 AM, and both groups got through the drive with no mishaps, no issues – it was a beautiful thing. Funny thing is both groups rejoined at Alice’s right where HWY 35 and HWY 84 meet. It became one beautiful big rally crows of multi-model BMWs. It was quite a sight to see. It was quite the sight to see Danny and his 750iL taking those sweepers and a nice pace and being very composed – right there alongside E30’s and M3’s. Nicely Done!

We cruised through HWY 35, turned onto HWY 84 and had a brisk run down through La Honda to Pescadero Highway. We climbed up past the YMCA camp grounds and made our way through some very nice country roads with turns and sweepers that probably tears of joy to our cars’ eyes. We then made our way through Pescadero and down the Beach right by HWY 1. Holy Cow! It was pretty cold there, but we hung out for a bit and gave the car’s a rest.

One of our attendees’ E34 developed an issue with the ignition switch / barrel. We all crowed around the car like a bunch of mechanical Geniuses trying to fix this car. HATS OFF to Nick who got the steering unlocked and was able to get the car running. What an incredible community. No one for a moment even suggested leaving one member behind, it was instant support and everyone pitched in to make it happen. Thank You Guys, I felt proud to be a member of this community.

The local Sheriff was a little perturbed about how many of us were there and we were kind of spilling onto the highway. We got the car moving, pushed it back off the road (It’s amazing how fast a BMW can move backwards with like 20 people pushing!), and then the experts in our group got to work. Tools came out from everywhere. It was finally BigBoysBMW’s tool and Nick’s hands that made the magic happen.

We took photos at Pescadero Beach and it was a time to shake hands with everyone again, or meet new people. We hung out a bit more then set off – heading north on PCH / HWY 1 to turn East again at HWY 84 and head back up towards Burlingame. There was a Pumpkin Festival going on in Half Moon Bay, so we avoided that. We took HWY 84 all the way down to 280 FWY. It was a great drive. HWY 84 at the coast starts with some fast paced sweepers and everyone was able to get through it at a brisk pace. It was sometimes obstacle course getting around the bicycles, but we all made it through okay – we “shared the road”.

We were all back at Peter Pan BMW around 1 PM in the afternoon. I think everyone enjoyed the drive, I most certainly loved it. It was fun to experience it with a bunch of friends. Nothing like seeing 30 cars in your mirror.

Back at Peter Pan, we all got together again. Some of the group took off after the drive – some had long trips or other plans. I believe Jeff and Artur had to go back to find Jeff’s GoPro camera which fell off the car – I hope the camera is okay. I already heard you found it – GOOD! Mac took off sometime soon, sorry I didn’t get a chance to say good bye. Zack had family plans, as I think Danny did too.

After lunch it was just time to talk shop and hang out with others that did not make the drive. My old friend Gilbert showed up with his Touring. In fact, we have at least four tourings there, Mottati and his Black E34 touring, Gilbert and his Red E34 Touring, and Corey with his freshly painted touring that he drove up with his son. We also had two fresh looking E39 tourings present. They were seriously FRESH looking, cars were absolutely beautiful.

To top it off, we were joined by a BMW Alpina B12 5.7 Bi-Turbo (Was it actually a Bi-Turbo?). The car was simply gorgeous. You could tell you were around a group of true BMW die-hards. A beautiful White V10 Audi R8 showed up, and most of use just glanced at it, I think we spent more time ogling the Alpina. LOL! Kinda funny, it seems the owner of the Audi was a genuine car nut like us too though and he hung out with the group for a bit.

And before I forget, thanks to all who helped with this event – either as a pack leader, giving directions, spreading good will, fixing cars, etc. You all made this one great event. Ready for the next one yet ?!?!

Special thanks to Peter (M5Board) and Paul (Bimmerforums) who hung out till 10:30 helping me try to figure out why my silly DINAN 5 would not run. You guys rock! http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/beerchug.gif http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/bigok.gif

The only e34 M5 at the 'after drive' part of the even i remember was a euro car from british columbia! I drove my newly manual trans swapped touring for some variety.

The alpina is a 5.7L v12, but no turbos.

The guy in the Audi is a former e39/e60 M5 owner, haven't seen him in years.

This picture truly shows why BFC is one of if not the best BMW community in the world. Michael's car developed an ignition problem just as we were getting ready to leave Pescadero. Everyone pitched in to help get it moving again, pushing the car off the road, getting tools, surfing the web for solutions - even checking on BFC while we were there. Not one person chose to leave the group. That is awesome! You guys are all rock stars!
