View Full Version : What is better way to spend labor day other then swapping a 6speed into E38?

We picked up a 2000 740i black on black yesterday with dead timing guides.
The chassis is in good shape and interior is great so we decided that instead of parting out the car, we will swap a 6speed into this one, rebuild the motor and start working.
For now we paired up the m5 6speed to one of our m62 blocks for test fitting. The shifter is already in and everything aligns great and all we need now it to get the drive shaft extended.

According to other online posters, the M5 trans and flywheel will not work with s62 motor. They say that it will bolt up BUT crank position sensor is located in a slightly different spot. But because there is no CONCRETE proof of that, i say that is a BS and ill be pairing up this m62 with s62 flywheel, clutch and trans. If it doesnt work, then i guess ill be their proof :)

Sweet! How the SC kit coming along? Can you pm me a price and some info? I just read the entire thread In the 5er forum. I like the fact that the m5 cluster will work correctly after installing the SC kit.

Yep. For quiet a bit cheaper then the guy wanted too. The motor is junked (block is good tho) but overall its one good body to start working on.

Well its the best time to swap things :)

Why if? This is one of the most straightforward swap. we already swapped 6speed into tourings and few other things. The only difference with this one is that we will need to get the drive shaft a bit longer. Other then the driveshaft, its just a walk in the park.

Will you be doing the coding yourself, or just the wire trick?

This is a typo error right? The M5 motor IS an S62 ... :dunno

What shift linkage did you use Alex? Did you just bolt up the S62 trans to the M62 block? How about trans mounts and all that?

Oh yeah we will be doing coding our self and the DME will be tuned by us.

Yeah that was a type :( Sorry Im on my phone and I get few typos/spelling errors with this keyboard.
I meant to say that the m5 trans WONT fit the m62 motor.

The linkages are from M5 and they fit great but NOT 100% perfect. I think ill cut and reweld those to make a perfect fit just because I have few days until new clutch lines come in.

No worries. I figured you would need to modify the linkages as someone else had to do this on another swap.

How about pedal assembly? What did you use?

I was about to buy it. Guy had m pars on it originally and wanted only 900! He then sold the m pars right before i left and told me 800. I passed as you can see :-) What did u end up getting it for?

Already did that one last 6speed e38. The only part we lost was ebrake pedal.
Next time we will incorporate the clutch pedal into the stock e38 pedal assembly. That will work better

As far as I know, the E39 pedal assembly is not a bolt on swap for the E38.

Yeah i wouldn't say a walk in the park. I know that it takes alot of time and know how to recode and program things to run right, esp if its just a 6spd, not inlucluding a swap, but I assume you already know/ have experience so Its a walk in the park for you. But for anyone else it would be difficult..

Yes it is. I know that BC I have done that already. You just lose your ebrake pedal.

M5 transmission works fine with a M62. Ignition trigger ring on the flywheel is the issue, not the CPS.

What he ^^^^ said, M5 flywheel is a no go with the m62

Yeah that is what I figured. As for trans, they are pretty much the same trans with the exception that M5 has a in gear/Neutral shifter position sensor.
