Well hello guys. Last week I ended up picking up a 2001 740i sport from a local seller in LA. Car was advertised for $5500 with 134K miles so it seemed like the car MIGHT be in ok condition. Upon inspection, it turned out that the car was JUNKED by the previous owner. Inside it smelled like gym (really like gym), the car had salvage title and tamper dot was on the dash. So despite all the problems, I hooked the car up to my scanner and figured out that the cluster was changed (dead pixels) and replaced with different one. The original mileage was actually 129K miles so to me, thats a huge plus but I did tell the owner that the chassis had way more miles then it really had. Why? Because the owner just lost his licence for drunk driving and I just wanted to get that poor car out of that Ukrainian hands :). So long story short, I was able to get the price down to $2800.
Here are the pics of the car at the time of purchase:

Now time for the Mods. Yesterday my friend and I decided to take a brake from work and start cleaning up the car. First thing first, get the ugly tan interior replaced with black, get the headliner and pillars wrapped with alcantara like material. ITS SOOO FUZZY! :)
Here is the finished project. (All pillars turned out to be PERFECT, just like OEM but headliner got messed up half was through at the sunroof bends. Ill keep it like this for a bit until i get a better material that stretches way more.)

Now, next thing we did was we replaced the C43 tuner with BM53 (2008 production), installed all latest updates, got aux working and installed M audio from my m5 partout. Yes we carried over all the speakers/tweeters and both M/// Audio subs to the e38. NOW the car sounds AMAZING. I was going to go with Focals at first but M audio speakers are PERFECT. IN my previous cars (e39 and civic) I had Pioneer DEQ-p8000 dsp with full time alignment and whatnot. That unit sounded amazing so i was going to go with similar setup for the e38 BUT after trying the M/// Audio, im not changing a thing. Bass is amazing, voice is clear and got does it sound perfect even at full volume.

UPCOMING PLANS:
1) Finish the interior. All the carpets and panels are coming in soon so Cant wait for that
2) Install M5 front and rear brakes
3) Get the 6speed swapped in.
Never in my life did I wait every day for the automatic trans to go out. And once it does on this car (hopefully really soon), 6speed is coming in
4) Get the top mounted twin screw whipple installed. We already did a top mounted roots eaton install on our last car but now going with whipple for this e38.
5) And finally get her repainted. Either Imola red or Jet Black.

Im not too fond of the burgundy red. Second of all, the car has been previously repainted after being crashed on the side. They did a really bad job pulling out the damage (small amount of frame twist) so ill be fully stripping her, getting the frame on frame machine and then after its all done, time for Imola red :)

Oh yeah they are great but im selling the m5 seats. Im going to be redoing the original contour seats. Going to install the massage system from 750li (I know the e38 system is easy to install but ill try to get the e65 system to work). After that system is installed, I going to use Napa leather on both side parts of the seat and use alcantara on the center parts (where you seat). Its hard to put it into words, but once its done, ill post the final results :)

Imola red and the calypso red you have now are my favorite colors. I would also love the tan interior. Wish I found a car like that before I bought mine. To each his own though. Very ambitious project. Keep up the great work. If you got the cash go for it.

Wow ! Your car looks great , I can't wait to see all them planes you have come together ! .
Them M5 front seats look smart were they a straight forward swap ?
NexGen7

I cant wait to do it all myself. I have the m5 brakes laying around right now and i just want to finish working on interior before I start with body/driveline.
Also having complete S62 m5 motor sitting in our shop doesnt help me much. Every time I look at it, I jsut want to swap it in but then realize that tuning that DME is a pain in the butt :(
The M5 seats are straight forward swap. Just unscrew your old ones, take them out, slide in the m5 seats and you are done...that is if your e38 a 09/1998 and newer. If your production date is before September 98, then you will need to swap over the seat wiring harness (still, that is really easy).

I SAW THIS ON CRAIGSLIST LOL!!! I called him too. Super sad guy am I right? Good luck with that piece of junk, he told me all about what's wrong with it. Also the car didn't pass SMOG he actually payed someone off to pass it. I was about to buy it and he just told me not to because I'm also a Russian speaker...

It was piece of junk. The motor is running strong now and interior is starting to look so much better. Overall, the car is getting there.
The reason the car didnt pass smog is because the hose from brake booster to manifold was destroyed. Replaced it (Rebuilding the entire motor in few weeks) and now it passed smog with flying colors.

Some cutting, making few adapters and I was in business. Its NOT plug-in-play as there are no points to bolt up the subs, but with few drilled holes and cutting on the subs, I was able to hook them up. Now the bass is Perfect!

Do you plan to do a proper repaint for a color change? What I mean by proper is basically dismantling the car especially pulling the engine and stripping the engine bay and removing all glass and body trim.

If I end up redoing the paint job (which I probably will), then ill be stripping the entire car apart (motor/trans, interior, windows, wiring and such). When it comes to bodywork, do it the proper way or dont do it at all.

Oh thank god. Seeing a beautiful car and then opening the hood and being hit with a totally different color is the biggest fail possible.

Details/pics?
Hello fellow e38 members, I work with NexGen7. I posted a whole thread on our supercharger build on the e39 Section.
Details/pics?
http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s472/NexGenPerformance/SC/P6160395.jpg
The supercharger in this picture was an Eaton M122 (Roots). The few problems with this one is that as you can see, it is very tall, it runs very hot without the water/air intercooler and the air inlet is from the rear. As NexGen7 said, we want to go to a TwinScrew (Most likely with Whipple) and create a completely new manifold for the supercharger to sit on.
Here is the dyno video we had, running on a pretty bad tune. It made 336 whp and 333 wtq

336hp? all that monies for 50hp...?. doesen't sound right to me..
The number you see (335hp) was the wheel Hp. That equates to about 400 crank HP.
At that stage, we were in Alpha stage with this SC. The main problem was the tune as we ended up running at 17:1 air fuel ratio after 4K rpm. Once the tune is right, we should be hitting 400rwhp on that setup (5.5psi). Even on the bad tune, the results were GREAT. nearly 400crank hp from 5.5psi of boost is great.
We ran side by side vs a VF 9psi supercharged 540i (Our friend) and he achieved only 12wheel HP more and 36lbft of torque less then us.

Those seats look pretty good! Are they even more contoured than OEM E38 sport seats? I hate to say, I love my sport seats, but this is really cool!
Please keep us updated, please! Especially keep us updated on the 6 speed swap. I really want to do that as well.
