View Full Version : No more E38 for me.

Well this weekend I did it, I traded in the 740. I could'nt stand how old and out dated the e38 was and the more time I spent in it the more I grew to dislike it. It was my first BMW and it was a great intro car. But now I'm in a real BMW, a car I feel is what a BMW should be. Pure luxury, pure power and pure sex on wheels. I was always in love with the e65. This car is head and shoulders above the e38 in every regard. I know some people hate this body style but I love it and know its a superior car in every way imaginable. Anyway I will be moving on from this forum since the e65 gets no love here. So Long.
Shes a Pearl Black 2005 745IL and shes amazing.:alright

A real BMW huh? Superior in every way? Interesting concepts and I wish you the best of luck, but I would have to disagree with those statements.

Funny when I got mine they were willing discount my '01 $6K to get them off the lot for the '02's - within 6 mos they were discounting the '02's $10K because they could not get rid of them. The bad rep had already started.:D

I have an E66 750Li facelift (2006) Monaco Blue Sport Package, Sytle 95s with many U.S. options minus rear entertainment and cool box. I like it but love my E38.
The E65/66 is not that much better of a car. Nav is better and the seating is much much better. Other than that will take my cars in this order....e38 750iL>e30 325iX>E70 x5 4.8i>E66 750LiS. The V12 in the e38 still pulls harder. The interior of the E66 I like and dislike in many ways. I also think the e38 is more connected to the road and looks much better overall.
Glad I have the E66 though and I think it is a good but not great car. It is not the same as some of the older BMWs. Maybe I just like the older ones better. My opinion.
Glad you are happy with the new ride and hope you enjoy it. Sorry to hear you are leaving this section of the forum.
Edit: Forgot to mention how much I love the soft close doors on the E66. That is really nice too.

Thanks to the folks who are happy for me. Like I said the forum is full of delusional people. I mean the car is in a league of its own. I know everyone thinks the e38 is the best car ever but its just not, come to grips with it. I'll take my 43 more horsepower and SPORT sounding stock exhaust anyday. Then ill just blast off in my spaceship.

2005 was the year of the facelift in Europe, did you go for the pre-facelift on purpose or was it later in the States?
Only a week or two ago you were delighted with your new display and MK4 nav, now its all gone. :(
Best of luck with the E66, my next car will probably be a 2007-2008 750li.

Yeah I dont think they changed until 06 here. Yes I was happy with the mk4 I tried to see if it was enough for me keep the car but it wasnt. I did take it out and put the mk3 back in. The mk4 is now for sale if anyone wants it.

You own one, then you get rid of it and all of a sudden you are better than everyone else? No reason to tell everyone how much better your car is, because I'm sure everyone who has a 2012 7 would say that your car is a piece of junk if they were on the same page as you. Far from an enthusiast.

I loved my 7 when I first got it and loved it for about 2 years. Year 3 is when I started to not like anymore. Probably because I got the new car bug. This is my 14th car so it was time I guess. Thanks again.

Isn't the E65 notorious for having problems? I talked to some techs before and they told me thats one car that always coming in and full of problems. I love the E38 but where is the E32 love?? lol I used to own one a few years ago as a beater and was so much to drive around.
Both your E38 and your E65 look nice.

I wish you luck, I've recently warmed up to the E65/E66 bodystyle.
With that said, I don't really think the newer ones are superior on a driving note, but the amenities will obviously be more copious. I enjoy driving the e38 MUCH more than my F02 or even my e90... It's just different. Everyone stares googly-eyed at my Anthracite '01 Short Sport, but barely notices the new 7.
But, the only opinion that matters is yours because it's your car!

Brad you do that you take the 43 extra horses but don't forget the 100 extra pounds over the iL that will be coming with you. And you know what, a lot of people here don't think the e38 is the best car ever, I imagine you would be hard pressed to find one that does. Granted everyone here likes them and even love them, I'm sure we all have an idea of the best car and I'm sure it's not the e38. Hell it might not even be a BMW.
Mine personally is the Ferrari 458.
But dude get off your high horse and get your head out of your ass and have some respect for those here who have given you advise and helped you solve all the problems you've have and helped guide you on certain questions.
Yeah most might not like the e65/66 but you don't have to
This car is head and shoulders above the e38 in every regard. I know some people hate this body style but I love it and know its a superior in car every way.Thats just being an ass and spitting in the face of everyone here. :confused
Did you see Dylan be an ass when he sold his e38 and got and e32 or even an e31, no.

I am not going to respond to Brad's thread - I really see no reason for his angst against this crowd. I came here from the E34 side of things and the welcome has been warm and overwhelming and I have made friends near and far. I don't any of us think we are driving the best car in the world, otherwise we wouldn't spend days on here trouble shooting and upgrading. That said, we can all agree that we own iconic cars.
Any-hoo... good luck to you man, in all sincerity, I hope you are happy with the new rig.
And now, to the more important stuff. Adam - Don't make me drive down to SD just to talk to you man! Call me! :evil2
Hey, to each his own. You can't argue taste or preference. To some - E65 is the best it can be. To others - far from it.
As much as I admire some of the features of the new 7, I just can't get myself to turn my head to catch a reflection. It's just not attractive to me. Not ugly, but not sexy either.
E38 is not the best car in the world. But it has character, personality, timeless style and the newest plus: it's not an E65.
Enjoy your new ride! Remember, this is hostile teritory.

I went from an '86 L7 to the '01 e38 - with 4 years in between where we did not have a BMW. We had two company cars and really did not need another....I was planning to retire in 2002 so I decided I had better get another personal car for the occasion. I got the 2001 sport and then did not retire 'til 2004 - not my own choice.
My DD is an 07 Avalanche (50K miles) and my wife drives an 05 Caddie STS (26K) and will prolly get the next new car or so she tells me, so the e38 will remain my toy for a while longer. With just 28K miles it will last a few years longer anyway I hope.:redspot

I have a number of cars and STRONGLY feel that the BMW 750IL is the LAST REAL BMW. People who have had BMWs back in the 80s and 90s know what I am talking about. People who just got into BMWs in the last few years won't understand this as well.
BMWs used to mean something but now they are completely sold out. I hate the Scandinavian IKEA style interiors of all the new BMWs. They used to be italian designed with wood veneers, premium leather with quality chrome accents. BMWs, Benz, Jags, and Rolls is what used to define class. I am sorry I don't have any respect for any new BMWs. I intentionally went out and bought a 99 BMW 750IL with the lowest miles because I miss the days when BMWs used to actually mean something.
I'd rather own any Lexus over an E65 including an RX300.

Goodluck with the car, guess you are happy with your decision...I still have to disagree with the fact that it is not the ultimate driving machine, it really is.. in every single way, power, comfort, Luxury, all there when you need it, drives straight like an arrow and soars down the highway like a bald eagle swooping up its prey!! .. first of all, based on posts above, many members in this thread stated that the OP Bradley is a turd and an ass. just loook at his avatar, its a photo of a teenager wearing thin spectacles and trying to show how big his little androgen-filled muscles are. nobody cares. obviously he is a show-off. he even made this thread to showoff his "new" 10-year old e65 to e38 owners. nobody here cares about his new turd car. its not like he could afford a 2013 7er, so as far as i can tell this thread doesnt even belong in the e38 forum. this thread should be deleted. :nono

Thanks man. I mean look the e38 is a great car maybe some day i'll pick up another one, but this time cheap. My car needed $3500-$4000 worth of work with misc oil leaks/timing chain guides and suspension. I couldnt justify putting anymore money in that car. I amazingly got $7000 on trade for my car plus 5 grand cash and I got this. My e38 had 135,000 miles. This has 63,000. I think I got a great deal on a car with half the miles and zero accidents.

LOOOOL.
btw, I will not get into a discussion of better or worse on E65 vs E38. The E65 is "newer" and has more gadgets. Does that make it better? That is up to each individual to decide. It certainly marked the long departure of BMW from their classic design themes for sure, and they sold the crap out of them.
However, if you think the timing chain guides were no fun, good luck with the coolant crossover pipe on the N62.

Great, that you thought it out like that. Your money that you invested and you wanted a return on it (ROI). I'm looking at KBB on what my car is worth today with zero to min problems. I'm not impress with the out come, but my first BMW so I'll keep it awhile. When I see in Auto Trader dot com for what people want, they want more than BB value. IF the car is TOTALLED OUT for whatever reason I won't get HONEST BB value from my Ins. Your cash and spend it your way. CONGRADs!

Good looking car. Going to disagree with you on the E38, but opinions vary. I will say this about the 745il E65 though, start saving up now for when that coolant pipe (that WILL go bad) that is inside the engine fails. Not an easy or cheap fix. Also if you think the E38 was expensive to maintain, wait until something on the E65 breaks. The alternator alone will be an easy $1000 because it's coded to the car. I think you're in for a suprise in ownership of an E65. ;)
Good luck with your "newer, better BMW" because there is no such thing as a "better" BMW when it comes to older, out of warranty BMW's.

He has the newer '05-'06, so it should be the updated model unlike the '02-'04 in terms of the coolant pipes. Not sure about the rest of the known issues such as the active suspension and etc. In terms of maintenance, that's the price you pay with owning a newer car across the board, unless it's a Corolla or Civic and the like.
I like my e38 a lot, but I'm not going to say I love it. At the end of the day, it is dated. Definitely does not have the presence of the e65/66. IF I can afford one, I would own a later model e65 or A8L, a Quattroporte, and etc. :):cool

I'm sensing a lot of Jimmies gettin rustled up in here, y'all didn't bring yer thick skin to the interzweb playground :rolleyes
We're all going to disagree with Brad's statements, it's a free country, words are just that....
I'll just paste an excerpt from Wiki that pretty much sums up my stance on the E38/E65 "debate":
'When the E38 was phased out in 2001 to make way for the new E65 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_E65), sales of E38s increased noticeably in the car's final months of production as people moved to buy the car before it was replaced. The E65's radical styling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Bangle) and iDrive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDrive) were not initially well received by consumers, so used E38s increased in value as demand increased'
It would appear that most of us in here side with what was the prevailing thought, back in '02, I'm not ashamed to say I think "with the majority" on this...... :stickoutt:D
They say you "never get a second chance to make a first impression", and despite Driftgirl's E65 and Brad's E65, I'll never warm up to 'em, they just look like clown cars that I'd expect drug dealers to pimp around in. It's not jealousy, not finances, just the truth, it does nothing for me :dunno

I'm no E65 expert, but I believe the coolant pipe issue existed up to and including '05. Just trying to prepare him for his reality.

No feathers rustled here, I just think it's funny he believes he's getting a better car. More options and luxury...sure. Better styling...debatable. Better reliabilty...nope.. Any BMW that is out of warranty is not reliable, plain and simple.

My biggest gripes with the newer 7's are the styling (which the facelift actually helped a lot), the size (those cars are really big), and iDrive (10 years and they almost have it figured out. Almost. Soon, really, promise.). All my opinion. Styling is subjective, people like different size cars, some people have thought iDrive was great from day one.
But that said - not my car. His car, what he likes, so good for him. I'm not going to talk trash about his car just because he's talking trash about mine. Don't stoop.

Brad - Not to crap on ya, but that ^^^ is the best statement you made in this thread so far. I realize that often times, our internet personalities do not match the real person, but you did come off as being douchey (Is that even a word? :eyecrazy) in your opening statement.
You have a right to what you like and what your pocket can afford. There's no need to crap on the rest of the party because they thin Bud Light is actually beer and not the Corona or Heineken or Carlsberg or Newcastle I prefer... (Sorry, personal vent there :D).
Anyway.... good luck with your car man, leave the E38 the way you came in - on good terms with great friends. Remember, other members have gone on to other cars like the E65 and are still here sharing experiences and such.
Now someone fire up a bong, and let's all hug and sing Kumbaya. Where's Emerald to hold my hand ?!?! ;)

I was going to say something similar - he bought an 05 which should be much better than the 02 - 03/04 models as far as I know. Maintenance costs are of course going to be higher and I think there isn't a lot of DIY'ing on these cars, but I could be wrong. I thought the E38 was the Starship Enterprise first time I came across one.
I am keeping my eyes on the E66's out there. I have a thing for a Sports Black Model with either Black interior or that Buffalo, Reddish looking leather. BIMMERTREK !!!!!!

I need to talk trash about your car Matt! j/k.
Sorry..... but everytime I see your posts and that signature picture, I want to jump in my car with a jack and lug wrench and come get those Alpinas! I swear it, your car makes those wheels look great! I can't wait to get tires on the other set. Hopefully, i don't end up selling those too.:D
Okay... back to Brad TV.

BTW its not showing off if you can back it up. Also your math sucks as my car is 7 years old not 10.
Looks pimpin', although I dislike the body style. I always thought, from reading your posts, that you should have been in an E65/66 all along. The E38 definitely isn't for everyone, as it looks, well, old, to many, so congrats on the purchase!
Whatever you do though please don't put chrome 22s on it. I see them around here all the time, and it looks hideous. The black wheels look perfect on this one.
Edit: also, no offense to anyone here, but guys, the E38 looks old. I don't care because I consider it a classic, but my next car will be an A8L W12. Gotta afford it first. Now that's a car that has "presence", and I dare say more than anything BMW has.
Maybe a QP, but limited parts availability would be a concern.

Brad The E65 Interior Is Really A Nice Upgrade.......I Was At The BMW Dealership Last Week For And Was Looking At The F01 The Interior In Those Cars Are Really Well Thought Out. The Power Assist Door Closer Rocks. On the E38 Side I still Like Because The Car Was Giving A Very Timless Look 20 Years From Now People Will Know That Car By It Looks. :cool. But If I was Going To Pull The Trigger On A New Car The FO1 Would Be On The Top Of My List. BTW It Is Funny How So Many Took Your Bait....:eyecrazy....:devillook....:mad...Good Luck On Your New Car.

I test drove and seriously considered getting an '06 750li. It was loaded out, but the ride, handling and performance felt no better than my '01 740il and the only real standout feature were the cooled seats (awesome). Plus, they don't look as good (imo) and don't get as much gas mileage. I'm going to look at a loaded out '00 740i sport today and will probably go with that if it's as described as I just prefer the e38 to the e65/66. I'd love an f01 but couldn't justify spending that much on a car that doesn't come from Maranello.

I've had a choice to own both, a 2004 760li and my 1998 750il. (same price for me mind you) The E66 has more power, Duh, but it feels bloated, it drives like a complete pig. I felt lost inside that car, it makes my X5 feel like a Miata. I told my cousin straight up that I didn't want his car, on top of that the engine sounds nothing like a real BMW engine.

Brad to add to my statement, congrats on the buy, it looks pretty balling, however you have to understand when you come in here bashing the e38s, nothing will end well. Everyone has a preference and we hear prefer the e38 over the e65/6 it's simple as that.
THANKS

Awe come on, mang. How are you going to go out like that. To dump on any bmw especially the e38. Really. You know what i think. I think something catastrophic happen to your e38 (knock on wood) so you made up this story about owning the e65 so you and your arms can fell better aout themselves and to dump on the forum memebers that mis diagnoised your car having you waste money on unnecessary parts. You just got it and you already got new rims and meat. Really. Come on mang. Im just saying.
Anyway that hefa is crucial. Damn, the way her ass is arch up like that. Brad, she's pretty but my e38 is sexy. You ever had a pretty girl in the bed and she cant perform but a sexy one she go all night.
Send more pics of the interior with you in it

Lol so let me understand this you think I made up that I bout this car? I mean you are pretty much right about my e38. My car needed $3500-$4000 worth or work. Both engine and suspension and I didnt want to put anymore money into a car that is going to worthless in another few years. It was completely driveable and probably would have kept going just fine, but it was only a matter of time. I cashed out when it was still worth something. Nobody misdiagnosed it, It was up on the lift and I saw the mess under there. Anyway I bought my e38 with 122k and sold it 135k in 3 years. I drive under 4 miles to work both ways and in 20k when this car has problems I will get something else, I'm not worried. This car is solid. Also I didnt dump on anyone. It was my opinon on the e38.
