View Full Version : Traction Control Light and Switch Non-Functioning

So I know there are different write ups on the trifecta and other things, but I am not sure if I am dealing with anything other than the DCS light.

Anyway, since I bought the car this light has been on and I have been on a kick to repair some of the things on it since it is a nice car and the more things you neglect the more expensive it will be later on, so right now I am addressing some oil leaks and one or two stupid cosmetic things I could live with but choose not to.

That being said I have had the code ran on the car and supposedly something electronically is not syncing right, I can't remember the correct terminology, but it wasn't anything that sounded like a major part failure. The button does nothing when it is pressed. The light stays on and when it rains my occasionally heavy foot reminds me the traction control is not functioning. Anyway, one suggestion I was told and read was to clean the barrel connector and connection points under the car. I did this and it did nothing. Light is still on, performance is the same.

So is there any sure fire way to get to the bottom of this and get it fixed once and for all?

Thanks!

The best first step would be to get the code looked at again and write down exactly what it is.
There are a ton of things that can turn on the DSC light.

It's a 2001 740iL

with 177,3XX miles on it if that could make any sort of difference.

Do you recall if it mention something about yoke calibration?

That doesn't sound familiar, but I think I need to get my codes re-read to really find out. I did read somewhere on here that when it's just the light for traction then that could be a steering sensor calibration issue.

Lateral accelerometer? Thats my problem...

I never tried to calibrate all my sensors to possibly get my traction control to actually operate properly. Does anyone think that if i try to do the calibration steps through DIS for the DSC it would fix my issue for my lateral accelerometer fault? Couldnt hurt to try? Has anyone actually had this sensor go bad in their e38? Can it be done thru INPA? I forget the code but i remember it stating "Cross Acceleration sensor value exceeded."

Damn... Just looked over some old dealer records and they tried to calibrate the sensors and the faults returned after... They believe it to be a wiring problem according to the documentation on the record... Ill give it a shot. Clear codes first, calibrate sensors and then see what happenes...
