View Full Version : Satellite Navigation 16:9 Widescreen
Bonjour bonjour
I have recently been informed, by someone I trust that only 16:9 widescreen board monitors from E38's will fit E38's due to heating ducts. Due to this does anyone know the actual part number for this screen as eBay is littered with screens that state they will fit E38, E39, X5 and the space shuttle and this is not the case?!
Does anyone, from the UK contingent have the screen for sale and the MK4 unit?
Thanks Thanks

Other model widescreens will fit, but the viewing angle will be slightly off. I have seen people use the x5 and e39 ones. Never seen an e46 though.
If your handy, the angle can be changed. It requires taking the screen apart. I have never dont it, but I have a friend that has.

I'm quite sure all the monitors will fit the E38, but non of the aftermarket monitors will, because of the heating ducts.
Stock monitors all have the tape player, but the aftermarket ones has the CD-player, which takes a lot more room.
Edit:
I was to slow. :) But isn't it just on the X5 you get the viewing angle problem?
Ahhh received. Maybe I'll get this screen and give it ago. See what the end result is

Other question I have, is will the Mk4 unit still run with the mini screen 4:3?
2000 BMW E38 735i - 2011 BMW S1000RR
Is it simply, unbolt, new unit. Plug and play?

You can use the MKIV on a 4:3.
psjr (BF C User) is currently using this set-up.
When I upgraded from MKII to MKIII it was a simple plug and play. All you have to remember is to take the GPS antenna wire from the trimble unit, and connect this to the MKIV.
And be careful with the wire. I broke mine internally. :(
Right. It is en route so I will begin with the MK4 unit first. And then screen after. Is there a how to on this?
Thanks

I assume your query is about UK fitment, in which case, sorry, but there is only one Widescreen that will fit right hand drive E38. The easy way to spot the correct unit is to look at the cassette block at the back. Viewed from the front, the block is offset to the right for right hand drive, and vice versa.
L/h drive units will not fit due to the offset cassette blocking striking the aircon ducting behind. Loads of ebay ads say their units will fit-not true!
I don't have the P/N at work-will post it later.

MKII to MKIV upgrade (not the best DIY):
http://mukerji.co.uk/2009/05/10/e39-m5-sat-nav-upgraded-from-mk2-to-mk4/
Basically you just remove the old MKII, remove the trimble unit, remove GPS antenna cable from the Trimble and plug it into the MKIV, fit the MKIV where the MKII used to be. ;)
Here's the trimble unit:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=1801&pictureid=10058
It's placed a little bit further to the rear, on the inside of the bracket.
Edit: You can use parts of this DIY.

You can see the trimble directly below the red arrow on this pic.

My widescreen is from an e39 m5
Right
I am confused. Some say that only the E38 screens fit. Some say E38 / E39 screens fit but not E46 screens. Two people I trust have both said different things.
I bought a MK4 DVD unit and screen P/N 65528385454 or this one P/N 65526913387 as there are two on the unit, both with BMW stickers
I got a cracking price so if the screen is wrong im not overly bothered but i would appreciate some clarification an proof to back up your posts

Acc. to RealOEM, E38 and E39 have the exact same part numbers on all the widescreen navigation parts, except the frame (nr.3).
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/g/g/229.png
E39: 65528385451
E38: 65528385450
Edit:
The first years of the X5 (E53) share the part number on the housing (nr.2) but the cover/screen (nr.1) is not the same. I assume that is because of the different angle the screen is viewed from on the E53 (as mentioned earlier).
Mr Hafsmo
Thanks. I reckon from this all I need will be a new frame from BMW then
I will give it a whirl at some point and let the forum know the results. Hopefully MR GALVIN maybe able to assist
Thanks

There would be no logical reason for BMW to produce a R/h drive unit if a L/h drive unit would fit! You are by no means the first person to fall into the trap of buying the wrong unit. To fit a L/h drive unit requires a 3D 'L' shaped piece to be cut out of the air con ducting which you will of course have to re-seal....

I'll post pics of later of the monitors
This unit has come out of a right hand drive car. However post pictures because maybe he did do the cutting. And it was an E39 not an E38

Hi TJ , im more than happy to assist :) , did you check the part number I gave you for the widescreen ? The first widescreen I got came out of a right had drive E39 and it didn't fit ! I can show you the scratches on the ducts in the dash from trying to fit that monitor " what a pain that was trying to get my money back ! " the bloke was telling me to cut the ducts ! :S . The frames are cheap enough to buy , I bought one for my widescreen as the one that came with it was cracked .
When you get the widescreen and the mrk4 unit and you need a hand fitting them I'm more than happy to help ! :) .
Good luck and don't rush into buying a monitor , I waited a year before I got mine . :)
Hi Mr Galvin
I have now bought another screen! With the correct part numbers. From an E38! Should be with me in the next few days. I will have to ask if we can do a day of tinkering, birch trim, MK4 unit an the widescreen!
I will have to bring you beer tokens. I was thinking have you thought of a price for your spare?
Tried fitting the rear lights. Failed on the nearside. Furthest bolt still on and dropped the spanner into the void. Bloody thing!
But this should be arriving tomorrow :D

Ok here is a R/h drive monitor, clearly showing how the cassette is offset to the right

And here is the L/h style to compare:
