Hey everyone,
About to get some work done on my mufflers, but I now know that I also need new cats as my current ones are rattly and awful sounding. Question is, what would you recommend? The place I'm going to get my mufflers worked on and the new cats put on is recommending a set of cats at $300 EACH... No thank you! I know the Magnaflows are quite cheap as just fine to use on these cars, but there's just so many options available - would anyone have any suggestions as to which ones to use?
Something that's high-flow would be nice, as I'm modifying the mufflers to be empty with just a straight-through perforated pipe inside and want to keep the air moving nicely throughout the whole exhaust. Magnaflow's are proven good by so many users on so many forums, so I want to save some bucks and have these guys weld a couple of those on for me instead. There's so many models, and then you've got universal or direct fit... beats me. What works?
Thanks :cool

These are the flavor of choice for many here, including myself. Had mine for 2 years with no issues.

Nice. I'd been seeing those in a number of past threads, and they look just fine, price is good too. Only thing I have to work out is where to get them from! The prices on Amazon are good and if I worked the shipping out properly ($3 a pound, 10 pounds, $30 shipped?) it all looks fine... Unfortunately the one's you've linked to on Amazon say they only ship to the US.
Might have to use one of those shipping services, where you have it shipped to a US address and the company then ships it off to your country? They don't make it easy! The eBay buyers want $120 for the cats then $100 or so to deliver it. Not TOO bad I suppose. Hmm.

Not sure about down under but here in the USA the used OEM cats can fetch $100/ $150 each from a recycler provided the majority of the substrate is still inside

Yeah it's the same here, they can get a fair bit of cash from the old cats... Of course they'll never tell you that though ;) I'm thinking I might just go with one of these eBay sellers. Looks like I can get 2 of the 94105's delivered for about $180 AUD. Not too bad I guess - beats the $600 the locals want for their alternative!!
Just to confirm - these 94105 universals use the 2.25" in/out... That's standard for E38 exhausts right? Just don't want to find out it's meant to be 2.5" or something you know haha. Thanks guys.

94105's are the right size for the vehicle. You could just remove the cats altogether :devillook

Nah I'll keep em on. As tempting as it is to not blow money on new cats, I'd prefer to keep them and 'upgrade' the mufflers. New cats are ordered, along with a full set of the Bosch design 3 fuel injectors, throttle body gasket and intake manifold gasket set.
Going to be like a whole new car when I'm done! You know, after I sort out the wobbly wheels. And the rattly sunroof. And stuff ;)

Where do you sell cats to? Junkyard?

To be honest I wouldn't have a clue. I just know that most exhaust shops around here can get good money for them... It's come up quite often in talks with my dad and his friends (they're all into doing up classic cars but talk about mufflers and cats comes up from time to time and they always mention about how much money the shops make from on-selling the cats if they're in good enough condition. I might make a point of finding out who they end up going to in order to get some cash back. Whoever it is, I doubt they'd do it for a 'civilian' like me!!
