My check engine light came on a few weeks ago; I scanned the code and it was P0444. I wiped off the gas cap and the light went off for a few days but it came back on again.
I have been researching P0444 code on the web (including this forum); conventional wisdom is to "try to" get rid of the bloody light by replacing the gas cap. Should I give it a shot and buy a new cap?
thanks

Common fault. Your dealership should have tons of caps available. They're not too expensive either.

So I guess I should not worry about replacing purge solenoid for now? Is a faulty gas cap the most common cause of P0444?

That code is probably not from a bad gas cap, but rather is indicative of a problem with evaporative purge control valve.

Fix gas cap first (less $),but worth a shot. If the problem persists, then assume breather valve.

I had a similar problem (tough my code reader doesn't say PXXXX so i dont know if i had the same code you have), I changed the gas cap and never saw the CEL ever again.

A bad gas cap would cause a large evap leak code, not a P0444.

I have the same code on my e39 as well. I did some research and it seems a new gas cap will probably not solve the problem. The purge control valve circuit is stuck open and most likely needs to be replaced. I found the part for a little over $80 on rockauto.com. It's not terribly difficult to replace, it consists of an electrical connector and a hose.

So did you actually replace the purge valves? was the code cleared?
