Hi All - I could really do with a liitle help...

I've recently purchased a 1998 E36 318i Convertible with fairly high mileage. The problems started a couple of weeks ago when i replaced the Lighter Fuse #32(which still doesn't work). Since then the ABS/ACS light is always on, The Heater Matrix/Radiator is leaking water into the passenger footwell. I've bought a used Heater matrix from ebay in case it does need replacing but have been told this is long winded and expensive job if done by an mechanic. My question is -

1/ Is there a short fix for the heater matrix to stop it over heating and leaking water?
2/ With the ABS/ACS light can i reset it as it is due for an MOT and will fail?
3/ although this is trivial compared to the other isssues
can i do anything else to get the lighter to work?

My mechanical experience is very limited..It seems i can't even change a fuse..lol

Thank you.
:help

1. Definitely don't be driving it while its overheating unless you want to spend a lot more money than you need to.

2. It might be the sensors, you can try cleaning your ABS sensors. You might have trouble getting them out in one piece, so be ready to replace. There is a speed sensor for the ABS at each wheel (I think the main speed sensor is on the diff?). Just remove them and clean with some brake cleaner and inspect. Replace any that look damaged.

3. Check that the lighter has power to it, use a volt meter and check the voltage potential between the two wires that feed it. Sometimes the contacts get dirty or the element inside the lighter wear out so the unit could have power but just not work as a lighter.

Assuming fuse is good.

Check Voltage across:
1. Center of outlet and side. If you have power, the problem is with your lighter element or adapter plug.
2. Check voltage potential between two wires that feed the outlet. If power here but none at the outlet, clean or replace outlet.
3. Check voltage potential at fuse.

Thanks for the reply, re the overheating my mechanic told me as long as i top up the water level in the rad it should be fine.. the downside of this is the water in the car..? if it is the sensors can these be replaced by complete novice?
thanks again.

If that's adequate and the leak is slow enough that you are not overheating- yes

If you are overheating still when doing this- NO NO NO

sensors are easy to get to. They are under a cover in the wheel well. All you have to do is take off the wheel and you have plenty of access. Lots of DIY walk throughs online for it.
