View Full Version : Engine Swap

There is probably loads of information on this but even if someone could point me to another thread that answers my questions that would be great.
I recently bought a '73 2002 and here's the plan: I want it looking classic and original on the outside, but want it to be as close as can be to new underneath.
My first plan is to drop in a new engine.
I read an article about someone who dropped in an S14 engine from an M3 into a '74, so I was wondering if it was possible to take any engine out of a 3 series and put it in a 2002?
Atm I have the opportunity to get a M54 engine from a 325i, but I'm not sure whether it would fit.
Anyone know if this would work? M54 into a '73 2002?

Anything is possible with enough time or money, wether or not it's a good idea is entirely different.
Yes you can swap in the M54, but.... (and it's a big but) you'll need to....
-Fabricate a new transmission tunnel (the 2002's tunnel is simply not big enough, and a new one will cut into the pedal area)
-Fabricate a new front support (the engine is too long)
-Fabricate a new firewalll (see above)
-Fabricate a new rear subframe to accept a medium case differential (and cut/balance/weld a new driveshaft.)
-After all that you'll likely need a cage (the 2002 chassis is not the most rigid in the world)
-Convert the engine to OBD1 and ECU mgmt. of some kind (Megasquirt).
And you'll still end up with a car that drive's like a snow-plow, the weight balance is like having a fat woman sitting on your hood.
Other options include....
-The mentioned S14 swap.
-M20B25 swap.
-f20 (honda s2000, will still need new tranny tunnel)
-M42 (if you're a pansy).
-Merlin V12 (if you're going through all the work for the M54, why not go a little more extreme?).
Much can be found here ( http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewforum/f,9/ ) the 2002 project section.

Just a matter of opinion, and I still think so. Guess we agree to disagree.

Lol. As much as that might have sounded like a "mine is bigger than yours" I was actually inviting you for a ride/drive in this 200+ hp 2002. Oooo, Now, you got the Col all twitchy, too!
My M2 was faster off the line, but I think they are about even the rest of the way down the line. I do own a 2002 that will meet your specifications eventually S 50 powered.
Looks kinda like this:

Another option; though be prepared for tunnel modification, (and those against sacrilege :devillook) a 4g63 would be the fastest bang for your buck. Www.projectzerog.com for rwd trans options since engine comes in either fwd/awd dsm's. But my old dsm with 1k worth of goodies and a $150 tune made 276whp with the clutch slipping (dyno video as proof is available). Im planing on swaping out the m10 4spd down the road and was thinking about this setup. Just more food for thought:eatpop:

i am kinda partial to simple, old, M10 based 4cyl swaps. they just work.

Was looking around tonight for swap ideas and thought..... though sacrilege and longevity wise not the best but for $1300 you can get a 13b turbo with engine/trans/harness, or a 4age with trans/ harness from a ae86... curious to see what others feel about these ideas because they would be different and kinda unique

If your caring what other's think on this, people will be rather polarized in their opinion (myself included, just look above). That being said, one of the funnest swapped 2002's I've ridden in was 13b powered. I think you could do much worse.
Also as mentioned keep in mind that this car originally put down around 108hp at the flywheel, so you will need to definitely compensate for the extra power (seem weld control arms, box trailing arms, stronger diff, reinforce driver's side motor mount arm, etc.) This is not just a suggestion, but a necessity.
Since you're in California, try and plan on coming out to the SoCalVintage Show (October) http://www.socalvintagebmw.com/#!__2012-meet
