I get it that there are a lot of threads comparing the two cars stock vs stock. Long and short of it is that BMW has the better fit and finish yet the Audi has the better straight line (and debatingly handling) performance.

My goal is to buy one of these two cars and put a light stage 1 or 2 tune on it without going too wild with bolt ons. I want something very fast but with a stock look (I love the performance of a friends 2007 with a stage 2 jb4 tune). I really like the look of the M Sport over the Audi and an trying to justify going that route. In all reality I wish it had the N54 engine since I don't think tuners will ever get as much HP out of the N55. Can anyone give me good reason to not jump ship to the Audi?

If you just want power and handling, and you're willing to drop that kind of cash, just skip them both and get a Corvette and smoke your friends 2007 on a track or in a line completely stock...and be done with it. No tuning necessary.

If you must tune for the sake of tuning, then I think the Audi is the obvious choice.

I had a bad experience with a B6 Audi S4, so my vote is for the BMW. Not to mention you have more tuning options with a turbo vs. a supercharger.

I wholeheartedly agree with that last statement. And if you put on real tires, do a real alignment and get it corner balanced, you'd be surprised at how easy one is to drive fast.
