Whenever Jeremy Clarkson says a diabolically absurd comment about a car, like "the ride is as comfortable as being shot," laughter and intrigue are caused.
He needs to keep studying.

I dunno, I only skimmed the article, but he seems to have a few good points, and I certainly saw less spelling mistakes than in a Jalopnik article. What's this guy doing wrong in your eyes?

That's some awesomely bad writing.
And he's angling to smooch corporate ass! Good for him.
Protip: When you want to bash other writers, editors and publishers, make sure your grammar, basic useage and spelling are above reproach.

Considering how poorly written Bill's article was, I think everyone is being pretty hard on Michael's blog. Maybe he asked for it but it seems a lot more thought out then Bill's rant. Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,

Who's side are you on Calvin? Certainly doesn't look like mine.

He did have a lot of good points, but I agree it was far from well written.

Both sides seem to make good points. Both writers are retarded though. BMW's gotta please the buyers. And if the buyers want to be posers, well then let them be. Can't pay the bills if you're not selling cars. I'll let the posers take a 60% hit in depreciation and then make a sweet track car later. :D

Mike, you're out there doing something (writing) and that's more than most so more power to you. Both BMW and Porsche recognized in the late '80's that there wasn't enough volume in an austere performance oriented car so both the M and the 911 became more luxurious. Was inevitable.
Reasonable people can disagree and that's ok. The trick is to disagree respectfully so everyone remains friends.
My suggestion to you, and I mean this to be entirely constructive, is to write as if everyone was smarter than you, more experienced, more skilled, kicked more ass, shot more bad guys, is better looking and has scored more chicks. There's an arrogance in your writing that turns off everyone older than you, and that's most everyone. What's needed is more humor and more self-deprecation.
Luck to you Mike.

While the blog guy is kind of a moron, Mr. Caswell has no idea what he is talking about.
It is painfully obvious to me that he has simply taken every fact-less assumption that has ever popped up on the internet about BMW M, and lumped them all into one article.

Say what you want about the article, but clarify one thing for me please. . .BMW is piping in "engine noise" over the sound system in the M5??? WTF? Tell me this is just a crazy rumor. . .say it aint so. I've been out of the loop, so I guess I missed that.
I've always bragged that bmw doesn't do cosmetic fake performance stuff like useless cosmetic intakes and vents on the sides of mustangs and corvettes. . .they do functional brake ducts on even lowly 318s, and you'd never know they're there. If an M engine no longer sounds like heaven on it's own and you have to dub in a more appropriate voice for it, then the M5 is nothing but a cartoon character. . .unbelievable.

Yep, 550hp, twin turbo V8 with a manual transmission is totally childish and cartoon character :rolleyes

Perhaps it has been edited but I read through it and there weren't too many errors. The article takes an incredibly informal, conversational tone peppered with colloquialism that I feel detracts from the fairly good points contained within. Also, snear quotes are good for one, maybe two topics only. When every other word has snear quotes, they lose value and become ridiculous. At that point, write satirically or with a sarcastic air so it is implied throughout. Example:
"Omg! Did you see what that girl was wearing? She wears those "clothes" and then wonders why people call her a skank!"
vs
"Omg! Did you see what that "girl" was "wearing"? She "wears" those "clothes" and then wonders why "people" call her a "skank"!"

Not saying it's not a great driving car. The cartoon character comment was in reference to it needing to have someone dub in a voice for it because it's own voice isn't good enough. . .Maybe Arnold Schwartzeneggar in Conan the Barbarian is a better analogy... they dubbed in his voice for that one due to his heavy austrian accent when he first arrived in the US.
Still, going that far out of their way to fake the funk on an M car is a serious foul in my mind. I hope that's a function you can turn off.
