With the introduction of the all-new 2012 3 Series BMW quietly axed the low-selling 335d diesel model, but now the an ultra-efficient oil-burner is set to return to our shores.

BMW currently offers two diesel powertrains in the 3 Series in Europe and while performance junkies might not be thrilled with the option we’re about to get the usually-frugal diesel buyers are sure to appreciate the down-sized engine.

According to a Tweet by Jason Cammisa of Automobile Magazine, BMW has confirmed it will offer a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel 4-cylinder in the US. Power is rated at roughly 180 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Sold as the 320d in Europe the automaker does also offer a a 330d model with 258 hp and a honking 413 lb-ft of torque.

It’s not clear how soon BMW will offer the 320d in America and if it will join the model lineup for 2013. Expect it to arrive in the sedan, as well as the 3 Series wagon.

UPDATE: BMW spokesman Dave Buchkow has confirmed above report telling AutoGuide that, “the next BMW Advanced Diesel engine that will come to the US is the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo-diesel. Specific timing and model applications will follow.”

We need the 5 series touring back along with a diesel option but this is great news, we need more wagons and BMW needs to get rid of the awful 550i Gran Turismo.

I love the 335d--just wish it came in a manual. I actually liked that engine so much I just ordered a X5d.
