so my friend with a bimmer let his friend drive and he was in second gear at about 2.7k rpm when he put 1st instead of 3rd and the car jerked and slowed down by itself while making a small chirp sound at the tires. i know its bad, but do you think that might have affected his transmission really bad?
thanks

If he was at 2,700 RPM in second before he shifted to first, he didn't money $hift past redline, so his motor isn't trashed which should be his first concern lol
His transmission is probably fine

haha yeah she didnt money shift, our concern was the transmission. which probably affected the synchros and clutch right?

As long as the clutch didn't slip (I don't think it did since it chirped the tires) and it didn't grind going into 1st, I don't think anything was damaged

Drive the car, it should be fairly obvious if the gear is destroyed (or not).

You have no idea what you're talking about Artic. The transmission should be fine that's not a significant mistake.

That's not much worse than clutch dumping in first gear at the lights. You'll be fine. Err, I mean, your friend who let his friend drive his car will be fine :rofl

A little engine braking and tire breaking never hurt. :shifty:

U should be perfectly fine, i went from 6300rpm in 3rd to 2nd yesterday, yeah tavh wrapped, tires barked etc, i was toying with a mustang so call me dumb but i just shoved the clutch in, slammed it back in third n layed it to the floor again. but i have a NV M50... (doesnt float valves as easy as a V M50)

Yea, its definitely not good for a tranny, but isnt gonna be the end of it. As much as people complain about bmw transmissions, you really have to consistently beat the living snot out of them to get them to break. They're resilient creatures.

If by "friend" you mean yourself and by other "friend" you mean your girlfriend? :)

Has your friend driven the car since and reported any issues? It wasn't a moneyshift so I'll assume the transmission is still functioning.
