So I'm doing a friend of mine a favor. Basically I got a very rare car here and his son totaled it and insurance company only wants to pay $5000 for it. Heres what I got. Sorry only 1 pic but I can explain what the car has.

Take the $5k and run.
Why do you think it's worth more??

ya, take the $5k and run for sure! Thats a great payout for a 20 year old car.

Shame, low mileage 93 535. Uncommon bird.
Five grand is fair, maybe a tad light coming from an E34 aficionado

I just had someone back into the passenger door of my car. The insurance company offered me only $2000 for the entire car. Granted it has higher mileage than yours I'd say it's in great condition for its age and mechanically sound.
$5,000 is a good deal. Take it.

Take the $ and run, beat the kid for wrecking a nice car, buy the remains for salvage value and sell or part out here.

I agree with the above statement.
Then, make the boy pay for the rest of the value.

+ infinity
I only got $3,800 and my wrecked '95 540/6 which would have been $4,300 without the wreck buy back for $500.00 I threw every possible argument and tactic known to get more and they simply kept saying we don't have to offer you any more take it or leave it..
yes the car was at an impound lot which I gathered they had a certain period before which the lot began assessing storage charges to them which they would then in turn begin taking from the offer. I wanted to move on and took it..
$5,000 is more than you'd get from my Insurance Company..

OP, you've got to remember that people are not stumbling all over themselves trying to buy old E34s. I too would take the five grand and run. It's a nice car but it's not worth a pile of money just because it's rare. I'd say the 5k is more than fair.

I had to fight the insurance company for tow months to get 4200 after buy back for mine. I would take the 5k in a heart beat.

Rarity doesn't equal money when nobody wants it. Sorry man, but there's nothing a 535 does that a 525 doesn't do. Take the money.
I have a Persian Rug I was told is worth $5,000 but its style/color is out of fasion and nobody buys them... its under my feet now.

By that logic, an E34 doesn't do anything a Toyota Echo doesn't do. There are plenty of people looking for manual 535's and they are quite rare. Doesn't make it worth $5k though, not many people would pay that much.

Yes it does, the BMW offers a body design that appeals to many, an interior that to this day is nice, reliability for hundreds of thousands of miles, and a really nice driving car. The 535 does literally nothing the 525 doesn't do. Except gets worse gas mileage. There aren't plenty of people looking for manual 535s, that's why it isn't worth $5,000.

You think that's bad? Here in MA I had to pay $103.75 vehicle excise tax for my car(210,000 miles)that THEY value at $4,150.I would have to pull teeth to get that if my car got totaled.I probably couldn't get $2500 on a private sale.
On a side note:In MA when you register a vehicle they tax you on the higher amount. In other words if you bought a $5000 car for $3000 you get taxed for the $5000 price and if that same car is valued at $5000 but you paid $15,000(say a classic muscle car)you get taxed on the $15k.I feel for you/friend in the loss of a nice car.Buy it back and part it out.You can get good money for the chip, interior, exterior and engine components. There are many members here looking for a donor car.
Take the $$ and run.

It also has more torque, a superior exhaust note, the m30, and makes me feel better in my pants. :D

I'd take a 535i over a 525i anyday.... More gear, more torque, better exhaust note, I find it simpler and easier to fix, more reliable, more classic.

I have both an M30b35 and m50tu. I think m50 is a better engine.
But that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Prius agrees with you.
For those of us that love OPEC and power the M30 wins.
Which has everything to do with the subject that is not at hand

i"ve passed on 535 5spds for $2500.
like SUV's, the value of 535 540 & m5 is inversely proportional to the price at the pump.

No I spose you gotta deal with what you got :stickoutt:D .... and we certainly deal with it here downunder, lack of models, lack of parts, the only touring ever imported was a 525i, its wrong I tell ya just wrong :(
BUT, if anything happened to my car I would seriously wanna look for a 525iT here and transplant the entire thing into it, my dream is a 540iT :lol

Like everyone said. I would go crash my 535i/5 into a tree right now if I knew my insurance co would give me 5k for it.
I'd take a 535i over a 525i anyday.... More gear, more torque, better exhaust note, I find it simpler and easier to fix, more reliable, more classic.
Really not simpler to fix, and the power isn't all that much more... plus less power range for modding, not to mention how much easier on fuel an M50 car is. Parts are plentiful, cheap, and easily upgradeable for the M50 car because that market has grown instead of shrank like the M30 market.
As nice as it is to have a little more horse power that the M30 makes, its not worth it now that it isn't 1993, unless you are going to build a turbo car... even then it can be argued that the M50 car could still be better.
My half ton crew cab 4x4 pickup almost get the mileage an M30 e34 gets and its as fast if not faster... Like I said.. its not 1993 anymore.. hell, but 540i6 is fast anymore, but I'm not going to make a post about how its faster than an E34 M5...

Be happy with such a high payout. The big question is why in the world, if you you loved the car so much would you turn it over to a teenager?
