Hello, is it possible to use pre-'96 ECU in '96 car?

I mean - my car is 05/1996 touring (VIN GB89454) with EWS2, but it is nearly impossible to get used '96 ECU and I want to try another ECU in my car, just to be sure that my original ECU works well (I am having some problems with engine, described in another thread (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1802104), so I want to know if its not caused by faulty DME/ECU). There are many ECUs on ebay, but all of them are 93-95 probably without EWS2. Will this older unit fit my car? (Non working imobiliser is no problem for me, just if it will be suitable to drive as normal).

Thanks

I help you out because this is easy to answer.

What's the Bosch number on the ECU of your car right now?

Depending on what you have, it's possible to install a DME programmed to your VIN, or with the EWS function deleted inside the ECU, then you bypass the EWS module in order to get direct power from ignition switch to starter motor.
