whats the purpose of the upload relay ?

I think you're refering to the unloader relay.
It's purpose is to take the electrical load off the ignition switch so the cars entire electrical system isn't run through the one set of contacts in the key switch.

Yes it does that, but that is only half of its purpose:

The unloader relays K5 and K7 supply fuses 17, 18, 19, 20 when the key is turned on and the coil is grounded through the starter. When the starter is cranked, the ground to the relays electrically disappears and the power to the fuses is interrupted while the engine is cranked. This takes a load off of the battery while cranking.
