My question is, how do you push back the piston in the rear caliper to facilitate new pad installation? The right rear has, what looks like the emergency brake attached to the back side of the caliper.:dunno

You'll probably need to loosen the brake fluid resevoir in the engine bay... that will royally help your cause because the system is still under pressure.

I always take off the resevoir cap before doing an install. This rear caliper is the funkiest thing. I've never seen anything like it.
The ///M's are so easy to do brake work on. I wouldn't be doing this job, if it wasn't for the shitty brake pads they put on the Mini's. The brake dust is unreal!

Well any BMW/Mini product has horrible brake dust... just the way these cars are.

m3brad,
See my response in your posting to the Maintenance forum. You need a special tool to turn and push in the rear caliper pistons.

Thanks! I picked up the tool at the local shop yesterday. I'll give it a go in the next few days.
I hope anybody planning on doing a rear pad swap on their Mini, remembers this thread.
I still say, it's one stupid design: :complain

i have yet to do any brake work on the mini, but after reading this thread and a few others, i am sort of dreading it. o well, i dont mind the ungodly amount of brake dust, ive gotten used to it from all the bmw's we've had. :stickoutt i'll be sure to pick up the 'tool' before i change pads.
