View Full Version : New Asymmetric 2 s are unstable- how long to break in?

I installed a replacement pair of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics on my 2004 Z4 one week ago. I only installed in the rear since the fronts are still very good. They seem fine cornering at low speeds but on a twisty highway at 50 - 60 mph they are VERY unstable. These are the new Asymmetric 2 tires. I didn't have this problem at all on the original Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics I had. The stability control engages on many curves and the traction warning light flashes. You can feel the brakes pulse several times going around the corners. I live in the Santa Cruz mountains in California and drive on highway 17- very curvy, lots of traffic. I have 300 miles on the tires and it does not seem to be getting any better. I'm taking the car back to Goodyear tomorrow and will get their inputs.
Anybody else have the Asymmetric 2s? Shouldn't these be "broke in" by now with 300 miles on them (about half of that on curvy highway 17)?

How worn are the fronts? Many times the difference in tread depth along with different tolerances on a new model can cause enough to trip DSC.

That's an interesting point- thanks for the feedback. I'll measure the tread depth and see (at work w/o the car right now). On the other hand, prior to replacing with the new tires, the rears were very worn (embarrasingly so...) and the fronts had quite a bit of tread left and the car was very stable.
Also, it is pretty easy to spin the rear tires on take off- much easier than before so the rears are suspect. Even the BMW manual states that new tires need 100 - 200 miles to break in but this is beyond anything I've ever experienced.

I took the car to Goodyear today and they're going to replace the tires with Dunlops (or ?, I still need to decide). These are the first Asymmetric 2's they've sold so they don't have any experience with them. They were pretty cool about it though. They don't have any other Goodyears in this size so they said they'd replace with whatever I want.
