I need some advice from the experts here. I took my wife's 2012 X5 Sport (8 months old with 8000 miles) in to the dealer today because it was vibrating at high speed. Its been doing that for a couple of months and is getting worse. The dealer told us that they could not find anything wrong with brakes/suspension, but that the tires were worn to 1mm/3mm and need to be replaced! They had no explanation, but suggested new tires plus alignment. The labor they will do for free, but replacement tires are close to $2k.

First, what the heck would cause this type of wear? My wife drives normal city/highway driving daily. I have never heard of such a thing.

Second, does anyone have suggestions on recourse? The dealer won't budge on giving me tires, but they have comped everything else. Any luck with BMWNA?

This is crazy.

Forget the dealer and take it to a local shop like les swabs, I'm sure they can help you with everything a lot better then your ''stealer-ship''. Plus if you do need tires I'm sure it will be significantly cheaper, alignment would be less expensive and I'm 99% sure that it wouldn't void any warranties

The explanation is that you have a sport package vehicle with ultra high performance tires...most likely 20" that are geared for performance and handling not longevity...couple that with the fact that you can't rotate your tires since they're staggered and from the factory the vehicle has a decent amount of negative camber and you end up with tires that wear quick.

You can probably get something else that will last a bit longer...by a bit maybe double...you'll be lucky to get 18k out of a set of ultra high performance sport package tires on an X5.
