So i went to the bmw dealership the other day to get some oil for my 1995 325i. I normally use 15w40 but the guys there gave me 5w30 synthetic and said it would be better for my car. But ive been reading that 5w30 synthetic would be bad on a car with such high mileage beacause of all the gunk and sludge that may be in the engine. Can someone please help? Im not too good with this.

5-30 is an ok weight but our obd1 cars do like 15-40 dino. If synthetic then the grade is either 5-40 or 10-40. Rotella, Mobil1, Motul, redline, AMSOIL, valvoline MST or HST whichever is the euro synthetic, are all popular brands. There are others too. go to BITOG and do some reading.

Your in Texas?? You need a heavy oil for that climate. 15W-40 is a minimum for your area.

I run Castrol Syntec 10w-40 in our 95 318ia with good results(no leaks, no oil use between annual changes, no blue smoke). 5w-30 is probably too light for these cars. If only have those two choices, I would opt out for the 15w stuff.
