I am getting desperate here and I really want my rims back on. What is the smallest size I can put on an 18x9 inch rim? 225's?
I am thinking 225/35/18 or 225/40/18...

I have 225's on my front 7.5" rims, I'd think they'd be quite stretched out and possibly not safe stretched to 9".

According to my Toyo fitment guide the 2 sizes you mentioned are OK!!
Just out of curiosity, why are you fitting narrow tires??

Ok, in another thread Kerscher mentioned this:
"on the 8.5" i wpuld get 215
on the 9.5" i would get 225 or 235"
So maybe those will fit. He's in Norway though, so he might be going for the euro style :) I thought 9" wheels meant you could fit 255s or possibly 265s, thats what I'd go for.

Yeah, fitting the tires on the rims is no problem. Avoiding shredding them like I did my 255's is my major concern.

"... shredding them ..." c/o the wheel arches??

Why the hell do you want such a small tire on a wide wheel like that? It pretty much kills the point of having a wide rim. :dunno
I would run at least a 245 on a 9" wheel.

Well like I said, I just don't want a shredded tire. I really have no idea what I'm doing.

these are going on your 318? stock suspension? fenders rolled? going by what I've read on the forums, you'd need some modifications to fit a 9" wheel. So when you say shredding, you mean the tire is rubbing so much its getting trashed?

damn...how do you shred tires with a 318:biglaughb:
i would put at least a 235/40 on there.
the sizes you mentioned will work, but i'd imagine they are far from "recommended". plus those sizes are way low profile....like rolling on rubber bands.
i'd go with a 235/40/18.
if you want super low profile though, go with the 235/35/18s.

I don't know, but I did. I will probably do 235/40/18.

I run a 255/35-18 on my rear, works great.

9" is an easy fit front and rear. I've seen as wide as a 10" wide BBS CH on the rear of a M3 with stock fenders.
