okay. i know what round look like, but what do DTM look like and why do they cost more, and how are they better, are they louder, or what?

DTM are the ones that take the upward bend. Here's what I found in a Google image search for DTM tips:
http://www.shortshifter.com/exhaust/images/SUE36DTM_TIPS.jpg
I was also wondering if there is a sound difference
DTM tips cost more since they have to either bend or weld the tips on the muffler. They make it sound louder since the sounds travel upwards. They do not increase performance and are mainly for looks. I have had an ACS DTM muffler and sold it for a lighter UUC straight tip exhaust.

There's no sound change. Just depends on what you want it to look like.

DTM tips are usually a little louder due to the upwards pitch of the pipes. It acts like a megaphone when your behind or near the car when it revs.
Warnings about DTM Tips. If positioned too closly to the bumper skin, the bumper will melt. That's why you sometimes see a metallic plate behind the tips. Also, there will be more of a sooty buildup on your back bumper from the airflow around the back of the car.

I think the straights look a little better on most cars. Most DTM sticks out much further from the car.

True DTM tips have a 45 degree cut and wield. Supersprint uses a pseudo DTM by having a bend, not the cut and angle wield. Doesn't look too bad on my E36.

I'd say upward tips are fine unless they extend out a couple inches past the rest of the car - that's rice.

The idea behind the bent-up design was a "courtesy" among the racecars so the high-pressure exhaust doesn't blow rocks, oil, and other debris at the car behind it.

"Was" in that it's not seen so much any more. Technically it's not "rice" but a legitimate racing design in that venue. Not much use in the real world, but an homage to the real racecars. How it looks is obviously a personal decision, and probably has a lot to do with what car they are on.

DO NOT GET DTM. IT IS SO UGLY. That said, I had to pay 300 bucks to get my Remus DTM tips cut off and new tips put on. My car looks so niiiice now. Anway, wanna buy some DTM Tips?

It's like chest thumping, and flattery somehow wrapped into one.. Mostly found in the youthful population? I'd rather say something was ugly or that I just didn't like it, then to make some sort of half-way slanderous (even somewhat racist sounding, at the least) comment like that.
So.. What do these 'ricers' call BMW enthusiasts that they don't like? *sigh* Not sure I even care to know! :dunno

You're right, it doesn't look too bad on your E36. But they do look out of place on a lot of the cars I've seen around here.
OT: GQ, are those Vanos stickers on the side of your car? No offense, but they look too much like those Civic dohcVTEC stickers. Not my cup of tea, but...

In lamest term....a modified is not always nice as stock form. A majority of the cars I have seen have half ass mods that make a stock car look better. People saying....oh look at that civic with a riced out kit and non painted bumpers....well you know what....I see lots of guys here do that also. Just b/c it is a BMW we can't say "rice"?
If you are trying to get that I have the right to say rice this and that b/c I am not asian....good luck.
Rice is always been thrown as a racist statement. People making fun of integras and crxs....hell half of those cars are alot faster than most of the cars here. I respect all cars and forms.

Thought I also read somewhere (someone posted a link to it also before) that another reason for the turned up tips was to try to take advantage of the high output exhausts on the racecars. The thought was that maybe the exhaust gas pressure could be use to create a little bit more downforce. Now, I doubt it really made much of a difference in reality in terms of downforce, but I guess when you're racing professionally every little bit helps... :dunno
Personally, I like em and think they look good on the right car....kinda like paying homage to the racecars of old. :D Granted, they should not stick out excessively from the bumper. I think there are much worse mods out there in the BMW world in terms of what one would call "rice", but to each his own. As long as we can agree to disagree respectfully then it's all good. Like the saying goes...opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one and they all stink. :D

The exhaust was actually bolted directly to the chassis without rubber mounts. The high speed of the exhaust gasses did actually give a bit more downforce to the rear. I read this a few months ago.
I have the SuperSprint upturned tips, and I really don't like them. But, for now it's functional, and they sound great.
When I have enough $$, I'll replace the tips or the exhaust.

DTM tips have to fit properly to look right. I think the supersprint "DTM" tips are ugly because of the upward bend, as opposed to the sharp angle of other tips. UUC DTM tips look damn good under the M bumper and I dont care what anyone says.

Reasonable question, but the answer is no. Remember, hot high-pressure exhaust gas is shooting out the muffler... rain hasn't got a chance.
Also, rain is not any more likely to get in simply because the opening is still vertical, same as standard round tips.
However, the legitimate flip-side to the question is about condensation (the white fog that comes out when you first start the car and it's cold) getting out. For that, the UUC version of DTM-style tips has a small drain hole in each tip right at the bend.
I am surprised at some of the opinions here (everybody's entitled to their opinion as the tip question is purely cosmetic and subjective!). The reason for my surprise is that in the applications where we offer a choice of round or DTM tips (now only E36), our customers choose either one in almost exactly even amounts.

I don't think they are rice by themselves, they've just been adopted as one of the latest cool things to have by alot of ricers. This of course means that alot of the DTM tips you see on the street will be poorly installed and hanging out way too far.
