i have a 1995 M3 with double spoke II staggered wheels with michelin pilot sport tires.
i will be needing new tires in a while and i was wondering what i should get. i would love to get another set of pilot sports but they are a bit pricey. i would also like to get bridgestone s03's but they are also pricey and don't last too long i hear (although i hear their grip is amazing).
i guess in other words, im looking for a grippy tire that isn't too pricey and that won't wear down too fast.
i'm looking at 4 tires:
- yokohama avs es100
- falken azenis
- kumho mx
- nitto nt555
i am leaning towards the es100's. i heard azenis has horrible treadware.
i actually think any tire will last fairly long to me because i don't drive hard and don't really do anything that will make my tires wear down particularly fast. however, i DO plan on autocrossing but then again, i don't plan on autocrossing too often.
what do you guys think?
(disclaimer: i know this topic has probably been discussed numerous times before but whenever i search for something, i never seem to find a direct answer for my questions.)

I know people who have gotten upwards of 30k miles out of S03's in 17" sizes. If that's not long enough wear for you in a performance tire you need to stop taking acid.
I would choose the MX's. I've autocrossed on both and had a set of Azenis for my street tires a awhile back, they were great, but not super great.
If you want good treadlife, the ES100's are probably the only tire of the choices you listed that will give that to you.
What about the PZero? The Bridgestone RE750? The Dunlop FM901?

I really like my AVS Sports. ES100's are good tires too. But, the ES100's are a ultra-high performance tire not max performance so keep that in mind
I bemoan not buying 10 Yokohama AVS intermediates when I bought my 5 for $68ea. I think it was something like $368 for 5 tires. I like the intermediates alot, although I've heard comparitively, they're noisy. What I liked the most (and installers hated the most) was their strong sidewall (probably why they were discontinued) Recently I drove an E30 M3 that was equipped with ES-100s. He said the sidewalls were not as strong as the AVS intermediates, and it was such a great car, (calm down E30 boys)....I never noticed any tire defficiencies. My question is this.
Is there anyone out there that had the AVS intermediates then went to the ES-100s and was displeased with the performance or wear of the ES-100s. Otherwise for the price range I'll probably go with the ES-100s.
Thanks,
Hank

If you are planning to get the ES100s...go for the RE750. They are just a better tire all around. If you look on the tirerack site, they do a comparason between the two tires.
I have the RE750s on my sister's m3 and they work awesome. If you are not a serious driver that beats his car all the time, these tires are great for ya. If you like to go faster than normal on turns...I would steer to a max performance tire.
If you are into straight line stuff....I can't help you there.

Im pretty happy with my es100, only complaint is in the rain. Man these tires suck in the rain.

My es100's got LOUD, didn't wear well and get very slick in cooler weather.
That being said, they gripped ok, looked great and weren't all that bad a tire.
I'm currently shopping for a set of BS RE750's now though.
Good luck.

Well the MX is by far the best for handling. It would be on the shorter end of the tread life though. I would say you have to weigh what is most important in the tire and go from there. The RE750 did handle better in our test in both wet and dry.
Bang for the buck I think the ES100 is a good option.
If I can help let me know.

ES100 suck in rain? Are you serious? I'm on my 2nd set and love them. I cut a 1.9 60' on bald tires with these things. They do get a bit noisy when they start to wear but that's because you can't rotate them to keep even tire wear.........
I'll never buy a 'Stone product.........

Got 14k out of my Kumho MXs on 245/40/17 with 1 Auto-x
Will be lucky to get that out of my ES100s in 225/40/18.
I will look to something else for my next set....did love the grip of the MXs......but looking for longer tread life. So far the ES100s don't seem to be the answer.
