ok guys i just bought a 94 525i, for $625... the body is solid, very little rust, but the issue, the engine... it sat for 4 yrs so its got old gas, oil and what ever antifreeze is left in it.. the owner said the head gasket went on it, and they parked it in his storage. he wasnt able to start the engine for me but it did turn over. i put a few gallons of fresh gas in it and filled the radiator up with water. while the car was off i filled the radiator up, water poured out of engine towards the back on the drivers side a few seconds after the radiator was filled. i also got it to start , but it wouldnt stay running more than a second or 2. ( had to get it on and off a trailor)

would it not stay running due to lack of compression due to bad HG? i plan on draining all fluids, and replacing fuel filter, belts, hoses and plugs soon, and get a new battery

You have a lot of work ahead of you. That said, I pulled the 525 out of a junkyard with a chain and have driven it for what, three years now?

Good luck!

Damn if you had posted this last week I could have sold you just about everything to include a refurbed head for the M50 for a good price but, I used it to knock down the price on the labor to install a used engine in my 525iT. I say just use motor it and call it a day.

meh, spend a little time with it first and then decide. You'll need to do a lot more than just repair the engine, anyway.

Confirm the HG is toast, find where the water is pouring from, etc. You aren't in a hurry, are you?

The hurry part is key. It took me 3 months to get mine back up and on the road.

Right at a year for me, but it had sheet metal damage as well. It's really nuts if you think about it, you can buy good running examples of these cars for nothing.

:shrug It's fun, though.

no im not in a hurry , i bought it as a project, the interior is trashed, i do automotive upholstery for a living so im not worried bout that, but it needs paint and a little bump work. as for the engine, i was gonna work my way down to the head gasket and follow all the lines , replace bad stuff.... as long as i get it running before michgan winter, i can work on the interior over the winter, and do paintwork winter/spring

I only have a little rust but it is surface. I bought mine for a daily so getting it running again was extremely important.
