I was wondering what sort of mileage you guys get and if what I get is in the norm.

When I donated my Civic (had 305K miles on it and I failed to replace the timing belt in time, my bad) I could squeeze about 37-38MPG out of it.

When I bought the 528, I wasn't expecting a great fuel economy but still better than my truck which is a thirsty beast that averages 17MPG.

Anyway, currently the bimmer gets about 28-29MPG which I thought was actually quite good for a (porky) car with an I6. My commute (80 miles round trip) is about 90% highway. I'm not concerned about the fuel economy but I'm just wondering if my mileage is within normal range out of curiosity :D

Is my electronic MPG/TEMP/MPH/M Gauge under the speedometer messed up on my 528i?

It says i'm getting 19.3 MPG.
And i feel like every time i look at the Miles i have left on the tank, it changes like every minute, and its a change like 46 miles to 42 miles in a minute.

And this isnt highway/freeway driving

I go by my what I actually drove (miles)and the quantity of gas I put in. I dont go by what it says on the electronic MPG/TEMP/MPH/M Gauge under the speedometer. That tends to be inaccurate.

With very flat conditions and no traffic with "easy" driving... you can manage that with a 540i... but as soon as you hit some hills or have to slow down then speed up for traffic I'm sure you are back down around 23-25mpg.

The OBC is also usually optimistic a bit... mine usually ends up about .2 MPG higher than actual calculated MPG.

Oh, its this thread again. Some of us get 1-5mpg because racecars, others upwards of 9000 because can't calculate.

A very select few (such as myself) don't care. The money we save/lose on gas pales in comparison to stuff that breaks and needs to be replaced on a regular basis.

The "averages" & "calculations" change as your driving conditions change.

If you're on the highway driving 65 MPH for 50 miles with no change in engine RPM...you will get better gas mileage versus if you are in bumper to bumper traffic going from ) 0 MPH to 45 MPH down to 25 MPH then back up to 60 MPH...all the time the engine RPM is moving up and down etc. Thus your RANGE will and fuel consumption will change based on how & were you're driving.

If your engine is cold...it will consume more fuel than when it is warm...thus again, the fuel & range calculations you see may change...many times going UPWARD, when the engine goes from a cold start to normal operating temps. :)

my lightly modified 540 gets about an even 20mpg lately since the software. And thats with a can of whoop ass stuck under the accelerator doing zero highway miles. If i take it easy i can get 22mpg all back roads.

Like I said, this is purely out of curiosity. If I wanted to save money on gas I would ride a flippin' bicycle and I wouldn't drive my track car at all.
