Ok so ive been looking at m3s since i wanna buy one. First i checked kelly blue book and it said 1995 m3 with 160k miles is worth 4800-4900, so i was like fine u know its worth it. ALL i see on this forum is overpriced cars. for example i saw an m3 with 240k miles in OK condition is going for 6500! why? how come its that much? i understand if it was 1995 super clean with 40k miles then i wud pay even double of what its worth (10k) but all u find in this forum is nearly stock(some mods) for 10-20k i think thats too much. I understand you love your car and you put a lot of effort in it but that price man....

well first off KBB is more of a guideline for the car's pricing, sadly it cant give a definite price for what every single car will be worth. and did you see how long it took for that 240k mile car to sell? people can ask whatever they want and you can offer whatever you think is fair, this is the wonderful world of private buyers and sellers.

check on ebay. I've seen in the last two months very nice m3's that went from 3500-4500. 95-99 M3s as well. Theres deals out there. Its all about whos willing to pay that much like a specific color combo

kbb is garbage. You can't really use it for anything over 10 years old. Too many variables to consider in value.

Used car market is based upon the public you are selling to and what they would pay for the car...
you prolly see cars on here being "overpriced" take note that this is an enthusiast forum of people looking to buy the same spectrum of cars....making it a sellers market...more chances to sell the car then on craigslist really.
The car shouldn't be that cheap, people still want the e36 m3 its high in demand to be a great track/street platform that doesn't cost an arm or leg. Hence why you will have to pay a higher price, they now you want that car, there isnt much that is comparable really for the price and power.

a lot can be gleaned from your lack of response of wanting to buy a sub $6k e36 m3
.....and why is this in the classifieds section?!

For 6 to 7 grand you cant buy shit dude, I mean to buy a low mileage used car be prepared to spend 10 to 15 thousand
So no they are not overpriced, if you had a low mileage m3 would you sell it for 6 grand? i think not

It's all in locations. If you buy a used Honda at a Toyota dealership, it's cheaper than if you walk across the street and get the except same used Honda AT the Honda dealership. You're on a forum where these cars are wanted, therefore, higher price, as well as the expectation that cars are better kept than say Joe Bum who bought a bimmer.

I dont agree sorry, Cars on forums are for the most part modded raced and beat on, I would much rather find one on craigslist , but i know its almost impossible to find one thats stock and not abused
There was one on autotrader being sold by the original owner, bone stock, that car sold in 5 days, i would have bought it if it was nearby, was asking 15k for it

The reason is because there are still idiots out there who don't mind over-paying

A car is worth what someone will pay for it. Bottom line. Nice cars are going for 10k therefore they are worth 10k. It's incredibly simple. Save up and buy a nice one and make the world happy.

Just curious, what do you call the cars from Craigslist then if bf.c cars are beaters?
IMO, bf.c members seem to take the maintenance and care of their cars more seriously than what I have experienced from Craigslist (personally). you don't see people buying stickers for their windows that say "craigslist.com" for a reason... I'm proud to have the bimmerforums.com sticker on my car.....just sayin' :shifty

+1
KBB says I should be able to buy one in very good condition for $6500. They're smoking crack. Multiply by 2 and you enter the real world.
I'm weeding thru all the junk now such as a 99 with 115k for 11.5k. Smoked tail lights and a booming stereo with no clue if the cooling system has been taken care of. Gimme a break!

Thnx for your responses guys, i got your point of view now, and i get it why its so expensive here, of course i would trust someone from this forum with the car than on craigslist but it aint worth so much haha well ill try craigslist or ebay and see what they have.
Craigslist is fine! Just buy one from an adult who has the money to properly maintain it. I found a great car on CL being sold by a mechanical engineer with all m3 issues resolved with TMS 1 and cat back for around 10k. Condition was 7.5/10. Didn't like the color combo. I found another on CL that I'm going for check out that is owned by an older gentleman and also has TMS 1. 115k miles. All issues tended to. Avus. Condition 9.5/10 asking 12.5k.

Wow, wrong. Since the economics of why you see these cars at the price they're at has been discussed, I'll talk merely from experience. I've looked at more M3's from CL than I care to admit, and they are mostly crap below $8500. I've purchased an E36 on this forum and it was in perfect condition. Funny how it's always the buyers of M cars who make "over priced" claims.

hilarious, I had this exact conversation out 3 weeks ago. The pricing on the m3's vary a lot, with the shitty one's overpriced (10k for a beater), and the nice ones underpriced (14k for a car with 40k miles that was 45k new, is a steal, given rarity), but still out of your/mine price range. (related situation there was a mint 944 with 20k miles on bringatrailer, for 22k, and all the commenters said something to the effect of the cars worth that much, but who'd buy it, its too nice to track, but not nic enough to be a show car, so whats the point)
I think the issue with these conversations (including mine) is people read it and make generalizations about what you're saying and flip out cause they take your comment, misread it, and take it personally. If you look at the other posts of a lot of these people who get pissed, youll see they seem like pretty nice people, constantly offering up great advice in other areas of the forum (repair, etc), they just get heated about pricing, haha.
To everyone else, the OP said they're looking at a 1995 m3 with 160k miles, all of you must admit that a stockish one of those, depending on color and other options is between 6k-8k MAX. Obviously having a nice turbo setup on the car or being super clean raises the price, but I don't think thats what the OP is referring to.
And with respect to this forum, because it's a bmw forum, most people think they can get more for the car than it is worth which logically makes no sense since people on here know these cars. If you watch ebay or craigslist, you'll see m3's come up for less, but in my opinion, I'd prefer to buy one off of a forum member cause since they are a forum member, that counts as a reference check, with many other posters vouching for the person, as opposed to craigslist where you know nothing about the person.
All in all, if youre looking for a beat m3 cause you like the look, your not going to find one on here for cheap.
--And some modifications seem awesome, but you have to think of the situation you'd be using it in (ex. I thought I wanted coilovers in my DD, drove a car with coilovers for more than 30 min, realized I never want coilovers in my DD, haha, they're great for the track, but not that comfy for long rides. After spending an hour and a half sitting on 93, very happy I do not have coilovers....though that manual transmission was getting annoying, haha. Or a performance exhaust, sounds awesome, but when I pull into my neighborhood at 11, 12 at night, I don't wanna be that dick neighbor. Granted, if I was still in college and all I used the car for was going to the gym or beer runs, etc, I'd totally want both of those things, haha.

BF.C used cars are generally better than if you found one on Craigs generally.
People on BF.C know their cars and you assume they take care of them.
With Craigs you might find a 318 with 20 in wheels and a guy might describe it has having a V6.

KBB is typically off by quite a bit....Think about it...your buying a high end sports car.
I hear you can get a really nice Hyundai for $6k...you gotta pay to play...otherwise buy something you can afford!!

I've read somewhere, you'll need at least 15 grand to own & properly maintain the condition of one of these E36s. Not sure how many people would agree?
I think people who would sell their M3 at the blue book value are people who have never done anything to the car since it was new. A car would hold its value when the previous owner have never done nothing much, modification that destroy the originality of the car, but rejuvenation in factory form with all OE parts.

The good thing about cars on a forum also is the sellers generally don't take into account that they are going to sell and bad cars generally can be discovered by merely looking at previous posts of the seller.

all of you saying they aren't over priced and yet i still cant sell my turbo M for 10k lol, grrrrr!
Very strange how some cars attract more attention than others in different ways. My friend has a R titled (basically beater) M and people drool over it and will pay 6k for it and then theres my clean title, well taken care of, fresh painted, well stanced, TURBO M and i cant get 10! whyyyyyyyy!?

sometimes mods don't garner that much value. sometimes extensively modded cars are looked down upon.

This thread is stupid.. kbb is for semi new, everyday car.. accoring to kbb you should get CLEAN e30 for 1500.. Can you? No, because they are not hondas, there is much demend for nice clean bmw, no matter what year. If u want to spend 4500 on bmw, get 328is.. case closed.
