Hello all,

I've got a peculiar problem that has confounded me completely. My E34 has the silver gray on hurricane M cloth pattern interior. The PO stated that this isn't the stock interior but was an available option on the Canadian/Euro spec M5s. The color code matches the VIN but I'm finding something that is definitely out of place. The center console that houses the shifter/ashtray/change holder is one piece up to the dash pad. At RealOEM and the dealership the exploded diagrams show this as a multiple piece assembly with the section show in my picture as two pieces, an upper panel and the section that houses the shifter. My problem is that, as you can see, I have this rectangular hole right about where your knee would be and I can't for the life of me find what's supposed to go there.

Any help would be fantastic. :help

Guessing it was cut in to maybe mount something... maybe a switch for the Cloaking Device?

I thought it might be something left over from another owner but the cut is super clean, like a factory cut.

That IS a super clean cut, But I've never seen anything OE mounted there.

The panel is weird too. Its all one piece. I'm starting to wonder if this isn't shoe horned in out of another model...

Agreed....the panel in my 91 is different. On mine, the cover under the steering wheel is one piece that extends over to and joins to the center console. It appears that your center console trim extends toward the underside of the steering wheel.

If I remember correctly, it was for the speaker system.

With that switch you can adjust the sound in the speakers front and rear. With the wheel all turned up/down theres only sound from the front speakers (can't remember if turning it upwards is front or rear), and ditto the other way.

Does the same as the Fader F/R function on most aftermarket head units :)

Okay, but the stock head unit has fader/balance function built in (the "MODE" button inbetween the scan buttons right above the volume knob). I'm digging through RealOEM right now to see if I can find it. I'm starting to think I might be better off just replacing the center console for one that has a two piece panel.

Found it. PN65121379325, "Fader Control w/Cylindrical Connector". Even located it on Ebay. Thanks a bunch everybody! I don't know if the connector is still there but I at least know what goes there.

#10 is NOT what that panel in the lower dash is...that rotary fader is no where NEAR the right size...it's the size of a window switch...that CAN'T be it.

What's the last 7 of VIN? I'm curious what options it had.

Both yes and no.

#11 on that drawing is the frame for the fader control switch. Without that, the switch won't fit. The two parts needed is switch #10 and frame #11. The good thing is that you can fit almost any old standard size BMW button/switch inside it, if you don't have the connector for the fader in your car. (same size as the instrument light dimmer, seat heater switch etc). So you can use the frame for most switches, and it will look close to original :) Or just blind it with a standard blind-lid.

I hope my english is good enough for this to make sense :stickoutt

Standard blind lid? Do you have a PN? I was also thinking I could use the fader switch with a subwoofer, dialing the bass up or down...

Something like this: http://realoem.com/bmw/showphoto.do?id=64111368498

Just a plug that goes where there is cut out a hole for a switch, but not fitted one. I can check it more thorougly later today. I can try with the E28 ones. At least they look like they're the correct size. I'll post back when I've tried :)

From realoem. The cap measures 23x42mm. A switch the same size, fits perfectly :)
