Hi all, need some help from the Mini experts!
A neighbor of mine is looking at an '06 Cooper S with 89k on the clock....and its a few states away, so he has not been able to see/drive the car. The owner has disclosed immediately that he believes it needs a new transmission, as it slips out of gear sometimes, and sometimes won't engage reverse. As the car is on eBay, he is looking at possibly picking it up at a bargain price, replace the tranny, and still be ahead.
He said it has the automatic with paddle shifters.... I was under the impression that S's only came with the 6 speed manuals (I've personally owned an e46 M3 with SMGII for 4 yrs , so I understand the difference between a manual with a computer operated clutch vs an automatic with limited paddle shifting capabilities).
Questions are these: Is this a common failure point on this year? How much do these transmissions run rebuilt (not sure if its shared with the 3 series, thus more supply)?
Any help is appreciated, as he is looking to pull the trigger over the weekend if it makes sense.
